Assistant Produce Manager

Full-time | Rosedale – Toronto, ON

About Summerhill Market

Summerhill Market isn’t your typical grocery store. We’re a Toronto boutique grocer known for scratch-made prepared foods, freshly baked treats, and on-trend ingredients that food lovers can’t get enough of. We move fast, stay ahead of the curve, and never settle for "good enough." Our mission? To delight customers with every visit — whether that's helping them discover something new or making their day with genuine service.

We're looking for an experienced, hands-on Assistant Produce Manager to support the leadership of our Produce Department at our Rosedale location. This role works closely with the Produce Manager to ensure the department runs smoothly each day while maintaining the highest standards of freshness, merchandising, food safety, and customer service. If you enjoy leading by example, coaching teams, and thrive in a fast-paced retail environment, we'd love to meet you.

What you'll do

  • Support the Produce Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Produce Department, ensuring exceptional quality, freshness, merchandising, and customer service.

  • Lead, coach, train, and motivate Produce team members while fostering a positive, productive, and accountable work environment.

  • Assist with ordering, inventory management, receiving, stock replenishment, product rotation (FIFO), and shrink control to maximize sales and minimize waste.

  • Ensure produce displays remain fully stocked, visually appealing, abundant, and maintained to Summerhill Market's merchandising standards throughout the day.

  • Inspect fruits and vegetables daily for quality, freshness, and food safety, removing products that do not meet company standards.

  • Deliver exceptional customer service by assisting customers with product selection, answering product questions, and resolving concerns professionally.

  • Support labour planning, scheduling, opening and closing procedures, and Lead on Duty (LOD) responsibilities as assigned.

  • Maintain compliance with food safety, sanitation, workplace health & safety, and all company policies and procedures.

  • Support seasonal merchandising, promotional displays, inventory counts, and department initiatives that drive sales and profitability.

  • Act as Produce Manager during their absence while providing leadership and direction to the Produce team.

  • Collaborate with Store Leadership and support other Fresh Departments as business needs require.

  • Additional duties as required.

What we're looking for

  • Previous Produce Department leadership experience in grocery or specialty food retail.

  • Strong knowledge of fresh produce handling, quality standards, merchandising, inventory management, and shrink control.

  • A positive, hands-on leader with the ability to coach, motivate, and support a high-performing team.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically active retail environment while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.

  • Flexible availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

  • Passion for fresh food, retail excellence, and creating an exceptional customer experience.

Perks of working here

  • Weekly pay

  • Employee discount on gourmet groceries and prepared meals

  • Employer-paid benefits for full-time employees

  • Flexible schedule

  • A dynamic, inclusive workplace that celebrates its people

  • Complimentary work swag (we'll keep you looking sharp)

  • Easily accessible store locations
