Role description:

Arcadis’ Roads and Highways group is seeking a Civil Structures Lead to lead the structures discipline on our major projects for the bridge engineering practice across the province.

Our team specializes in the pursuit and delivery of large-scale bridge and structural rehabilitation and design projects nationwide. As a key member of our team, you will leverage your extensive bridge engineering and construction expertise to lead and deliver complex bridge projects from inception to completion. You will collaborate with diverse clients in both the public and private sectors, managing multidisciplinary teams through planning, design, and construction phases. This role offers exciting opportunities to work on some of Canada's most challenging infrastructure projects.

This senior leadership role is ideal for a highly motivated individual looking to take ownership of the delivery of high-profile transportation infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative team environment and communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.

A strong level of initiative, leadership, and technical expertise is essential to excel in this role.

We are seeking an experienced Civil Engineer with a structural specialization in bridge design, including highway, rail, and pedestrian bridges, retaining walls, and potentially complex or movable bridge structures.

Role accountabilities:

In this role, you will lead the design and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects and enhance Arcadis Ontario’s bridge engineering practice by focusing on project delivery, business development, and team mentoring. You will provide technical direction and oversight on bridge projects, guiding them through the concept phase, detailed design, and construction stages.

Strong interpersonal, client and stakeholder management skills are an essential requirement for this role as you will be the client facing lead for the discipline on major projects. As the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, and internal teams on design-related matters, you will facilitate clear communication and maintain strong relationships. Your ability to address concerns, provide guidance, and drive project progress will be essential to successful project delivery. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will be key to delivering integrated and innovative project solutions.

In this role, you will provide design and delivery leadership and oversee the full lifecycle of bridge projects, from initial conceptualization through to construction, ensuring exceptional quality and outstanding customer satisfaction at every stage. You will lead and mentor engineering teams, fostering a collaborative environment that maximizes team potential and drives innovation. Your responsibilities will include performing complex engineering calculations, analyses, and designs while adhering to rigorous quality standards and industry best practices. You will be expected to prepare and review detailed engineering documentation, including drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports. Additionally, you will offer technical expertise during the construction phase, which involves reviewing contractor submissions and providing on-site support as needed.

Project management and business development will also form part of your responsibilities. In this role, you will develop and execute comprehensive project plans, effectively managing budgets, schedules, and resource allocation to ensure successful project delivery. Building and maintaining strong client relationships will be essential, as you proactively identify and address client needs. You will contribute to or lead project pursuits by developing winning proposals and assembling high-performing project teams, while also performing financial management and reporting to ensure project profitability.

Quality assurance and compliance are integral components of the position. In this role, you will ensure design deliverables meet client requirements, regulatory standards, and Arcadis’ quality benchmarks while also contributing to business development by leading technical inputs for bids, proposals, and long-term client engagement.

Finally, in this position, you will proactively identify and address engineering issues, applying your problem-solving skills to overcome challenges and drive project success.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in progressive bridge engineering experience encompassing inspection, analysis, load-rating, design, and construction. Seismic analysis and design experience is a strong asset
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor engineering teams
  • Strong technical report writing, problem-solving, and communication skills

Preferred:
• Ideally 15+ years of experience in bridge design
• Experience working with municipalities across Ontario as a project lead/manager
• RAQS qualification for MTO assignments is an asset
• Understanding of RAQS requirements from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) is an asset
