Role and Facility Information

Come work as a Temporary Emergency Physician with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

The Squamish General Hospital Emergency Department (SGH ED) is seeking dedicated physicians to join our temporary staff team. These positions include a mix of weekend, daytime, and night shifts, with opportunities for additional shifts. Compensation is provided through a group service contract. These positions may also be eligible for Rural Program funding, adjudicated on a case by case basis by the Ministry of Health.

Squamish General Hospital serves a population of approximately 29,640 and operates a 13 bed emergency department. The emergency physician also provides cross coverage for the acute medical inpatient unit and an adjoining long term care facility for urgent issues. The ED receives roughly 20,000 visits per year. The current schedule includes four single coverage physician shifts per day. Lab, CT Scanning, x ray, and ultrasound are available on site. Specialist consultation is available at Lions Gate Hospital, approximately a 45 minute EHS transfer from Squamish. Squamish General Hospital is a level 5 rural trauma centre, with no general surgery or internal medicine on site. Anesthesia backup is available 24 hours a day.

Applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC and hold a CCFP or FRCP. Candidates should possess experience in Emergency Medicine. Interested candidates are invited to submit a cover letter and curriculum vitae (CV). Please include a minimum of 3 references from Emergency Departments where you have previously worked (eg. From a Department Head, Group Lead, Nursing Lead/ PCC, fellow emergency physician, etc.) These will be reviewed by the Squamish Association of Doctors (SquAD) Hiring Committee and an interview for selected candidates will follow.

Job Requirements
• Hired candidates must be available to work 3 shifts/ month throughout the entire year (though we cannot always guarantee 3 shifts/ month). This monthly minimum will be re-evaluated on an annual basis.
• Hired candidates must be comfortable with a full complement of shifts (ie. They must be comfortable with single coverage shifts, overnight shifts, weekend shifts, etc.)
• There will be a probationary period of 6 months for new temporary staff.
• Renewal of the temporary staff position will take place every 6 to12 months. Retention will be based on performance and scheduling needs.
