Play an integral role in Worley Consulting’s Environmental & Sustainability practice by helping customers understand, quantify, and manage environmental liabilities across the asset lifecycle. You will support complex liability assessments, asset retirement obligation evaluations, environmental due diligence, and closure planning for energy, industrial, mining, power, and infrastructure assets.

Working with technical specialists and project leaders, you will translate environmental data into practical, defensible insights that inform regulatory compliance, financial planning and security requirements, transactions, and long-term asset management. This is an opportunity to combine technical environmental consulting with commercial awareness and contribute to decisions that create measurable value for our customers.

Purpose of the role

As an Environmental Specialist, you will evaluate environmental conditions, identify data gaps and regulatory risks, develop auditable liability cost estimates, and prepare clear technical documentation. You will collaborate with project managers, customers, and multidisciplinary specialists to deliver accurate, defensible work in Alberta and other jurisdictions.

Location

This is a full-time position based in Worley’s Calgary, Alberta office, which is the preferred location, or the Edmonton, Alberta office.

The role combines office-based technical work with travel to customer and project sites as required. Field assignments may include site condition assessments, asset inventory verification, data collection, corporate file review, and support for environmental liability and due diligence evaluations.

You will be responsible for:

  • Delivering site-specific liability assessments that meet Alberta Energy Regulator requirements, including Directives 001 and 011, through data-gap analysis, Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) activities, technical evaluation, and supporting documentation.
  • Planning and supporting site assessment, monitoring, remediation, reclamation, and closure programs that inform liability assessments and asset retirement obligations.
  • Developing and verifying environmental liability cost estimates, cost models, closure assumptions, documentation for regulatory, financial reporting and transaction purposes.
  • Completing technical reviews, data validation, and cost verification to ensure findings are accurate, traceable, auditable, and aligned with customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Conducting environmental due diligence assessments for acquisitions, divestitures, and mergers by identifying liabilities, closure obligations, regulatory risks, and potential financial exposure.
  • Completing field visits to assess site conditions, verify infrastructure and asset inventories, gather environmental information, and confirm assessment assumptions.
  • Partnering with project managers and multidisciplinary specialists to define scopes, manage priorities, maintain quality, and meet schedules and customer commitments.
  • Communicating environmental risks, technical findings, and management options to customers and stakeholders.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement in technical methodologies, data quality, project delivery, and knowledge sharing across Worley Consulting.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • 5–10 years of relevant environmental consulting experience, including field and office-based work in contaminated site assessment, remediation, reclamation, closure, or liability management in the oil and gas industry.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, Soil Science, Chemistry, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Professional designation as a P.Ag., P.Geo., P.Eng., or equivalent in Alberta, or eligibility for registration through APEGA, AIA, ASPB, or a transferable professional association in another Canadian jurisdiction.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and ability to travel to project sites as required.
  • Experience completing Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, remediation, or reclamation programs.
  • Experience developing auditable remediation and reclamation liability cost estimates, and supporting technical documentation for regulatory, financial reporting, or transaction purposes.
  • Knowledge of Alberta liability management requirements, Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines, the Subsoil Salinity Tool, and other related guidance.
  • Strong analytical, technical writing, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and present credible conclusions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience using EQuIS, GIS, or comparable environmental data management and analysis tools.
  • Ability to take ownership of assigned technical scopes while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Customer-focused judgment to identify environmental risks, explain potential implications, and support practical risk-management decisions.

Preferred assets

  • Environmental liability or closure assessments for mining, power, industrial, or renewable energy infrastructure assets.
  • Demolition, well suspension and abandonment, facility decommissioning cost estimating.
  • Experience with liability management and closure requirements outside Alberta.
  • Data management and processing using advanced data management tools and cost models.

Benefits

Eligible Canadian employees have access to a comprehensive benefits program that includes medical and dental coverage, life and disability insurance, health and wellness spending accounts, and confidential employee and family assistance resources.
