Lead Hand Carpenter

Want to build exceptional projects without sacrificing your evenings, weekends, and family time?

At Ackard, great renovations start with great people.

As the proud recipient of the Edmonton Renovation Company of the Year Award for 2026, we're looking for an experienced Lead Hand Carpenter who takes pride in leading by example, mentoring others, solving problems, and producing exceptional work.

Our projects run Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. No evening shifts. No weekend work. No overnight travel.

For more than 40 years, Ackard has built a reputation as one of Edmonton's most respected residential renovation contractors. We take pride in delivering exceptional craftsmanship while creating an environment where our team members can build rewarding, long-term careers.

What You’ll Do

As a Lead Hand Carpenter, you'll be a key leader on site, helping coordinate daily activities while working alongside the crew to deliver high-quality residential renovation and construction projects.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll help keep projects moving, support apprentices and carpenters, coordinate with trades, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to Ackard's high standards.

Success in this role means delivering exceptional workmanship, supporting the development of your team, maintaining a safe and productive jobsite, and helping create an outstanding experience for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead by example while performing carpentry and construction work alongside the crew.
  • Coordinate daily site activities, labour, materials, and trade partners to keep projects moving efficiently.
  • Mentor apprentices and support the growth and development of team members.
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship, safety, and professionalism on site.
  • Read and interpret project drawings, specifications, and layouts.
  • Identify and resolve day-to-day construction challenges to maintain productivity.
  • Communicate effectively with Site Supervisors, the Project Manager, homeowners, and trade partners.
  • Take ownership of project outcomes and contribute to continuous improvement on site.

What You Bring

We’re looking for someone who combines strong carpentry expertise with leadership capability. You take pride in your work, lead by example, and are driven to deliver high-quality results while supporting your team’s success.

  • Proven experience in residential carpentry, particularly in renovation projects.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide, motivate, and hold a team accountable.
  • High-level carpentry skills across multiple phases of construction.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions on site.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with team members, sub-trades, and clients.
  • Professional, respectful, and solution-focused in all interactions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Comfortable taking initiative and ownership of work and outcomes.
  • Comfortable in using digital tools and construction technology.
  • Highly motivated with a strong work ethic and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Working Conditions

This position involves hands-on work in both interior and exterior residential construction environments. As a Lead Hand, you are expected to actively work on site while also overseeing crew activities, coordinating work, and maintaining productivity in a fast-paced environment.

  • Work takes place on residential renovation and custom home build sites.
  • Frequent and routine work at heights, including ladders, scaffolding, roofs, and elevated platforms.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Regular lifting of materials up to 50 lbs; occasional assisted lifts up to 75 lbs.
  • Physically demanding work including standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and continuous use of tools and equipment.
  • Work may be performed in confined, elevated, dusty, or noisy environments.
  • Regular use of power tools, hand tools, ladders, scaffolding, and other construction equipment is required.
  • Must consistently wear and enforce the use of appropriate PPE (hard hat, safety boots, eye and ear protection).
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and organized job site while work is actively in progress.
  • Frequent coordination with team members, sub-trades, and supervisors in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Standard schedule is Monday to Friday, daytime hours; occasional overtime may be required to meet project timelines.
  • No regular out-of-town travel is required.

What We Offer

We believe great people deserve great support. Here's what you can expect when you work with us:

  • Be part of an award-winning residential renovation company with over 40 years of success and a strong track record of continued growth.
  • Competitive compensation that reflects your skills and experience.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits through Sun Life.
  • Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Life insurance.
  • Voluntary RRSP plan with company contributions.
  • Professional development, training, and career growth opportunities.
  • Positive, team-driven culture built on collaboration and respect.
  • Birthday, work anniversary, and milestone recognition.
  • Christmas holiday shutdown.
  • Team-building and social events.
  • Strong commitment to work-life balance with little to no overtime and no overnight travel.
