Drive the Equipment That Builds the Future

About MacKay

At MacKay Contracting Ltd., we don’t just move equipment — we keep projects moving. For over 40 years, we’ve been a trusted name in heavy civil construction across the East Kootenays, supporting major infrastructure, mining, utilities, and roadbuilding projects. From highways and subdivisions to mine developments and large-scale civil works, our team takes pride in delivering safe, reliable, and efficient operations.

We’re looking for a skilled and safety-focused Class 1 / Lowbed Operator to join our team and play a key role in transporting the heavy equipment that powers our projects.

How You’ll Contribute

As a Class 1 / Lowbed Operator, you’ll be responsible for safely hauling and moving heavy equipment to and from project sites across the region. You’ll work closely with our operations, logistics, and field teams to ensure equipment arrives safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

This role is critical to keeping our crews productive and our projects running smoothly. You’ll represent MacKay on the road and on site, bringing professionalism, accountability, and strong safety practices to every move.

What You’ll Get to Do

  • Safely operate Class 1 tractor-trailer combinations, including lowbed and equipment hauling configurations
  • Load, secure, transport, and unload heavy construction equipment and attachments
  • Conduct pre-trip, post-trip, and daily equipment inspections
  • Ensure loads are properly secured and compliant with applicable transportation regulations
  • Coordinate with dispatch, shop personnel, and field supervisors regarding equipment moves and schedules
  • Complete logbooks, inspection reports, permits, and required documentation accurately and on time
  • Assist with equipment spotting and maneuvering on active construction and mine sites
  • Monitor equipment condition and report maintenance concerns promptly
  • Maintain a professional and safety-focused attitude while working around crews, clients, and the public
  • Support the team with other hauling or yard duties as operationally required

Who You Are

You’re dependable, mechanically inclined, and take pride in operating equipment safely and professionally. You understand that hauling heavy equipment requires patience, attention to detail, and strong situational awareness.

You work well independently but also understand the importance of communication and teamwork in a fast-paced construction environment.

You Have

  • Valid Class 1 Driver’s License with a clean or acceptable driver’s abstract
  • Experience operating lowbed trailers and hauling heavy equipment including up to 10 axle rail section low beds
  • Knowledge of load securement practices and transportation regulations
  • Strong understanding of safe driving practices in construction, highway, and resource road environments
  • Ability to safely load and unload a variety of heavy equipment
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional overtime or weekend work as required

Even Better If You Have

  • Experience hauling equipment in civil construction or mining environments
  • Air Brake Endorsement
  • Knowledge of permitting requirements for oversized loads
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, loaders, or graders
  • First Aid, CSTS, or site-specific safety certifications

What’s In It for You

  • Competitive wages and overtime opportunities
  • Company-paid training and development opportunities
  • A strong safety culture and well-maintained equipment fleet
  • Opportunities for growth and advancement within the company
  • Work with a respected team that takes pride in doing the hard jobs well
  • Be part of projects that help build and support communities across the region

Location & Schedule

This position is based out of Cranbrook, BC, with travel to various project and work sites throughout the East Kootenays and surrounding areas. Hours will vary depending on operational needs, weather conditions, and project schedules.
