Job Title: Data Historian Specialist

Job Description

The Data Historian Specialist provides full-time sustainment and support for a large, complex AVEVA PI historian environment serving a major Alberta utility-system operator. This role focuses on keeping production systems stable and available, resolving issues and user requests, and completing recurring maintenance and project work. You will balance scheduled activities with ad hoc support, work closely with an established technical team, and communicate professionally with client stakeholders in a hybrid on-site and remote environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain an existing AVEVA PI / OSI PI environment across multiple environments, ensuring production systems remain stable, reliable, and available.
  • Investigate and resolve break/fix issues and user requests received through tickets, Microsoft Teams messages, email, workshops, or assigned action items.
  • Complete recurring and scheduled work, including monthly PI server patching and other planned maintenance activities.
  • Participate in scoped small projects, taking on work as assigned based on your skill set, experience, and availability.
  • Balance scheduled project and maintenance work with ad hoc support, with scheduled work typically ranging from approximately 4 to 20 hours per week and the remainder focused on support, break/fix response, and user requests.
  • Maintain system availability by monitoring the health of PI servers and related infrastructure, addressing issues proactively and reactively as required.
  • Troubleshoot production issues related to the PI historian environment, including basic network administration and server-related problems such as load balancing and replicated servers.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to user requests, providing clear explanations, guidance, and follow-up to ensure satisfactory resolution.
  • Contribute to upcoming project work planned for 2027 and beyond, collaborating with senior PI specialists and other team members.
  • Work within an established team, collaborating closely with a technical team lead and senior PI specialists who handle higher-level tasks and complex projects.
  • Participate in a structured transition and ramp-up period, learning the existing PI implementation and its approximately 17 maintained environments.
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and diligently with client stakeholders; day-to-day client communication is considered equally important to technical PI capability.
  • Exercise sound judgment in escalating complex issues and involving senior team members when needed to ensure timely and effective resolution.
  • After gaining comfort with the system and receiving approval for production-system access, participate in the on-call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend support.
  • Provide on-call coverage approximately one week per month, covering weekdays from about 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 24x7 customer support during the assigned on-call week.
  • Coordinate and prioritize competing planned and emergent requests, ensuring that critical issues are addressed promptly while scheduled work is managed effectively.
  • Engage in ongoing learning to deepen AVEVA PI expertise and broaden understanding of related tools and protocols used in the environment.

Essential Skills

  • 3 to 7+ years of hands-on Historian experience with AVEVA PI / OSI PI in production environments.
  • Foundational or basic network administration skills, including familiarity with load balancing concepts and replicated servers.
  • Basic server troubleshooting skills, particularly in the context of PI servers and related infrastructure.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and diligently with client stakeholders and team members.
  • Ability to operate in a client-facing support environment, demonstrating self-direction, dependability, and accountability.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage competing planned and emergent requests while coordinating work with a technical team lead.
  • Personable and collaborative approach, with the judgment to escalate complex issues and involve senior team members when appropriate.
  • Comfort learning and supporting a sizeable PI implementation with approximately 17 maintained environments.
  • Comfort working in both on-site and remote settings, including participation in an after-hours on-call rotation once approved for production access.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with other historian platforms such as AspenTech IP21 and DataPARC.
  • Ability to log in to Windows servers and perform basic tasks; complex server setup or configuration is not required.
  • Familiarity with data connectivity and industrial protocols such as ODBC, TCP, OPC, Modbus, and MQTT.
  • Exposure to DCS (Distributed Control Systems) and PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), though deep experience is not required.
  • Basic understanding of SQL Server administration; deep SQL administration expertise is not required.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly strong working knowledge of Excel.
  • Customer service experience, especially in roles that involve supporting external clients or customers.
  • Experience in IT support or helpdesk environments, with experience handling tickets and user requests.
  • Exposure to visualization and business intelligence tools such as Power BI and Tableau.
  • Additional experience with network administration and server troubleshooting beyond foundational levels is an asset.
