Job description

Huawei Canada has an immediate permanent opening for a Researcher.

About the team:

The Huawei Human-Machine Interaction Lab unites global researchers, engineers, and designers to redefine human technology relationships through user centered, hands on research. We focus on agentic AI and multimodal interaction (voice, touch, vision, gesture) across smartphones, wearables, and emerging devices—advancing agentic workflows, multi-agent orchestration, and intuitive human-AI interfaces. By tightly integrating sensing, algorithms, and systems, our prototype driven work ships directly to products, enabling seamless task delegation and human AI collaboration at scale.

About the job:

  • Contribute to research and exploration at the intersection of intelligent devices, AI experiences, and emerging interaction paradigms, with a focus on how human-computer interaction is evolving in the AI era and how established and emerging interaction approaches may work together.

  • Bring together technological capabilities, user needs, device form factors, and real-world scenarios to identify high-value interaction problems and opportunities.

  • Propose novel interaction concepts, mechanisms, and system-level approaches that address concrete challenges people face with intelligent systems, leveraging possibilities enabled by evolving technology.

  • Turn interaction concepts into concrete scenarios, use cases, and testable proposals, and collaborate with design, engineering, and technology teams to validate key assumptions and experiential value through prototypes and experiments.

  • Evaluate interaction solutions with appropriate user research and technical methods, covering efficiency, learnability, understandability, controllability, trust, and quality of collaboration, and continuously iterate solutions based on findings.

  • Stay current with emerging interaction paradigms, AI capabilities, and intelligent hardware trends, and translate valuable technologies, products, and research developments into concrete interaction explorations and product opportunities.

  • Collaborate with AI, software, hardware, sensing, design, and product teams to advance promising interaction concepts toward implementable system solutions, technical proposals, patents, or product directions.

The total target annual compensation for this position ranges from $106,000 - $156,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.

About the ideal candidate:

  • Master's or PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Human Factors, Cognitive Science, or a related field. We welcome candidates from diverse disciplinary backgrounds.

  • Genuine curiosity about emerging technologies, with a habit of actively experimenting with new products, tools, and technologies to discover the interaction opportunities they could unlock.

  • Hands-on experience in interaction innovation, intelligent systems, consumer electronics, digital products, or interaction research, design, or engineering.

  • Strong interest in, and solid understanding of, how evolving AI capabilities may shape human-computer interaction, including how new intelligent interactions can work alongside traditional GUIs, input devices, and established user behaviors.

  • Ability to generate valuable ideas for open-ended interaction problems and develop them into clear concepts that can be discussed, iterated on, and tested.

  • Strong systems thinking, with an understanding of relevant technical capabilities and constraints and the ability to work with design and engineering teams to move solutions forward.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain interaction ideas clearly across research, design, engineering, and product teams.

  • Familiarity with one or more relevant methods, such as user research, experimentation, or system evaluation, and the judgment to choose the right approach for each problem.

  • Experience advancing interaction ideas into prototypes, system concepts, technical solutions, patents, or product directions is an asset.
