With a strong commitment to safety, quality, and engineering excellence, we deliver reliable structures that support communities across Canada and beyond.
What Are We Looking For?
Algonquin Bridge is seeking an experienced Intermediate CAD Technologist / Structural Steel Detailer to join our Engineering team.
This is a hands-on technical drafting position requiring strong AutoCAD experience in a professional drafting environment. We are looking for someone who is comfortable developing detailed drawings for custom projects where designs and project requirements can vary significantly from one project to the next.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in structural steel, bridge, civil, infrastructure, or related structural drafting/detailing and be able to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information and translate them into accurate, fabrication-ready drawings.
This position is well suited to an experienced CAD Technologist, Structural Steel Detailer, established Drafter, or Civil/Structural CAD Technician who enjoys technically challenging, project-based work.
What You Will Do
· Develop detailed concept, engineering, customer approval, construction and fabrication drawings for steel bridge projects.
· Produce accurate 2D AutoCAD drawings from engineering designs, calculations, sketches, specifications, customer drawings and project requirements.
· Develop drawings for custom projects with varying configurations and technical requirements.
· Prepare detailed drawings of structural steel components, assemblies, connections and fabrication information.
· Interpret engineering drawings, project specifications, tender documents and other technical information.
· Review drawings for dimensional accuracy, constructability, completeness and compliance with engineering and project requirements.
· Prepare and revise drawings throughout the design, approval and fabrication process.
· Develop bills of materials and other technical documentation required for fabrication and project execution.
· Work closely with engineers, project managers, production and fabrication teams to resolve technical and drafting issues.
· Incorporate engineering and customer comments into drawing revisions accurately and efficiently.
· Support multiple projects and drawing packages while meeting established deadlines.
· Identify potential design or fabrication issues and work with the Engineering team to develop practical solutions.
· Support continuous improvement of drafting standards, templates and engineering processes.
What You Will Need
Required
· Minimum 5 years of professional drafting/detailing experience, with significant hands-on AutoCAD drafting responsibilities.
· Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD 2D and demonstrated experience producing detailed technical drawings.
· Experience in structural steel detailing, structural drafting, bridge drafting, civil/structural drafting, heavy fabrication, or a closely related field.
· Strong ability to create and interpret detailed fabrication, shop or construction drawings.
· Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, technical documents and design information.
· Strong understanding of dimensions, tolerances, sections, details and drawing standards.
· Ability to work on custom, project-specific designs rather than primarily repetitive production drawings.
· Strong attention to detail and ability to independently identify drawing inconsistencies or technical issues.
· Ability to manage multiple drawing packages and priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
· Strong problem-solving, organizational and communication skills.
Education
· Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, CAD/Drafting Technology, or a related technical discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant drafting/detailing experience.
Strong Assets
· Previous experience with bridges or other transportation/infrastructure structures.
· Structural steel detailing experience.
· Experience working with a structural steel fabricator or heavy manufacturing environment.
· Experience preparing fabrication/shop drawings.
· Knowledge of steel fabrication processes, including welding, bolted connections and structural assemblies.
· Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D modelling software.
· Experience working directly with engineers and fabrication/production teams.
Why Join Us?
· Competitive compensation based on experience.
· Comprehensive health and dental benefits.
· Company Pension Plan after one year of service.
· Internal career opportunities and Educational Reimbursement Program.
· Family Education Grant Program – up to $4,000 per year.
· Employee Recognition and Rewards Program.
