Job description

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

COMMUNITY GROUP CARE

MANHATTAN PLACE

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL

PERMANENT FULL-TIME (40 hours/week - 2 shift lines available)

MEANINGFUL WORK. LASTING IMPACT.

At McMan Calgary & Area, connection is at the centre of everything we do. Each year, we support more than 5,000 children, youth, adults and families facing complex challenges, including mental health concerns, addiction, homelessness, poverty and disability. We believe every person has deep and lasting worth, and we see people for who they are, not for what they're facing.

Our work supports people to rebuild and strengthen connections to self, peers, family, community, culture and the land. Belonging, identity and wellbeing grow through relationships because people need people. Professional support is there for a season or a reason, not a lifetime. We create the conditions; people build the lives they want for themselves.

The Role

Step into a home where young people come first. Manhattan Place is a community-based group home for youth aged 12 to 17 who are referred through Children’s Services. It offers a safe, stable living environment with individualized support and around-the-clock care. The work goes beyond day-to-day care. We partner closely with each young person to strengthen relationships with family and friends and to build lasting connections in the community.

As our Youth Development Coordinator, you’ll be the heart of the home: a steady, caring presence who makes sure everyday needs are met in a way that feels safe, supportive, and truly like home. Working from a trauma-informed, strength-based, and relationship-based approach, you’ll nurture the personal, social, cultural, and educational growth of each young person while modelling a collaborative, cooperative spirit.

No two days look the same. You’ll provide day-to-day care, set goals alongside youth, and carry out case management. You’ll also liaise with caseworkers, connect with natural supports, and prepare young people for their next steps. Along the way, you’ll teach life skills, help build routines that bring stability, and champion each young person’s overall well-being.

We’re looking for someone who builds strong relationships, cares deeply about people, and is ready to learn alongside youth, families, and communities. If that sounds like you, come help us build a home where young people feel supported, connected, and ready to thrive.

While the primary shift lines currently available are indicated below, flexibility for shift rotation within Community Group Care is required based on program needs:

  • Monday to Friday: 7am to 3pm
  • Thursday to Monday: 3pm to 11pm

Key Responsibilities

  • Upholding a duty of care that prioritizes trauma-informed principles to address the complex needs of children and youth who have experienced significant trauma.
  • Recognizing and responding to trauma-related behaviours with sensitivity and understanding, emphasizing safety, cultural connectedness, and relationship development.
  • Assisting youth to develop life skills, social skills and/or access to community resources.
  • Organizing and coordinating general aspects of youth day-to-day needs (e.g., supporting youth with daily needs including getting ready for school, setting up appointments, attending monthly meetings with caseworkers, general household duties such as meal preparation, laundry, and cleaning, etc.).
  • Teaching and supporting individuals with activities such as hygiene, basic cooking, money management, shopping, and safety skills.
  • Facilitating physical, recreational, educational, social, cultural, and vocational activities.
  • Accompanying and/or transporting youth to activities such as appointments, shopping, school, employment or leisure activities, or as required.
  • Supporting youth development through role modeling and teaching new skills.
  • Supporting youth in navigating relationships with natural supports.
  • Providing stabilization through predictable structures, clear expectations and positive behaviour support.
  • Case management for assigned key youth including completing assessments, reporting, individualized case planning, and transition planning.

Ideal Candidate

  • A Diploma or Degree in Human Services
  • Relevant experience that may come from many places including youth work, family roles, community leadership, cultural involvement and learning, or lived experience
  • Someone who builds strong relationships, cares deeply about people, and is willing to learn alongside youth, families, and communities
  • Knowledge of the Natural Supports and Trauma Informed Practice Frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate relationships and connections where youth expand their personal support networks and find new and meaningful relationships
  • Proven skills in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem solving, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A good understanding of how trauma, grief and loss can impact identity and connection with natural supports
  • An understanding of expectations, principles and philosophy around transition planning
  • Knowledge of Indigenous people’s unique histories, languages, cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and knowledge systems – direct experience working with Indigenous youth, families, and communities is strongly preferred
  • The ability to attend at minimum 2 staff meetings per month (these may fall outside of regular work hours)

Role Requirements (required PRIOR to start date if you are the successful candidate)

  • Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check (dated within 6 months from date of hire)
  • Child Intervention Record Check (dated within 6 months from date of hire)
  • Standard First Aid Certification and ASIST Suicide Intervention training (dated within 3 years from date of hire)
  • Valid Driver’s license
  • Driver’s Abstract (dated within the past 30 days from date of hire)
  • Reliable vehicle and proof of $2M in third-party liability insurance coverage
