The Disability Management Advisor is responsible for the organization's occupational and non-occupational disability management programs, with a strong focus on WCB, Short-Term Disability (STD), and Long-Term Disability (LTD) claims management, early intervention, workplace accommodation, and reducing lost-time injuries. Working closely with Health & Safety and operational leaders, this position proactively identifies safe, meaningful modified work opportunities to support employees in remaining at work following workplace injuries whenever medically appropriate. The Advisor is accountable for effective claims management, reducing WCB costs, managing STD/LTD premium rates, facilitating sustainable returns to work, and ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, collective agreements, and organizational policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain sole accountability for the organization’s disability related absences, including WCB, Short-Term Disability (STD), and Long-Term Disability (LTD) claims portfolios, proactively managing claims, costs, timelines, and outcomes to support effective disability management and return-to-work planning from initial notification through to resolution.
  • Work closely with Health & Safety and operational leaders to facilitate immediate, safe modified work following occupational and non-occupational injuries, to prevent lost-time claims wherever medically appropriate.
  • Guide operational leaders regarding modified work, accommodation obligations, and disability management procedures.
  • Develop and improve disability management procedures, modified work programs, and standardized claims management practices.
  • Develop and coordinate individualized accommodation and return-to-work plans based on physical demands analysis, functional abilities, and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate return-to-work planning for employees returning from disability and/or non-injury-related leaves of absence, ensuring appropriate collaboration with operational leaders and clinical education if applicable.
  • Identify opportunities for early claims intervention, reduced claim duration, and sustainable return-to-work outcomes.
  • Identify and escalate complex claims, potential undue hardship, and significant employment-related risks and escalate those claims appropriately to the Director of People & Culture.
  • Review WCB claims, identify cost-management opportunities, and coordinate reconsiderations, appeals, and cost-relief applications where appropriate.
  • Maintain proactive WCB claim communications, coordinating with WCB representatives, employees, operational leaders, and internal stakeholders while providing timely and appropriate updates.
  • Track and report WCB costs, claim volumes, lost-time days, claim duration, modified work participation, and return-to-work outcomes.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all STD/LTD claims, coordinating communication among all relevant parties and providing timely stakeholder updates while safeguarding confidential medical information and ensuring compliance with applicable privacy legislation.
  • Track, analyze, and report on STD/LTD claims, including incident rates, claim duration, indirect employer costs, and other relevant metrics to identify trends, assess financial impacts, and support informed decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential case management records and ensure compliance with applicable legislation and privacy requirements across the board.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in disability management, human resources, occupational health, rehabilitation, or a related field.
  • Minimum three years of direct, hands-on experience managing WCB claims, std/ltd disability cases, workplace accommodations, and return-to-work programs.
  • Demonstrated success reducing WCB costs, lost-time claims, and claim duration through proactive claims management and modified work programs.
  • Extensive working knowledge of Alberta WCB legislation, claims processes, cost relief, reconsiderations, and appeals.
  • Strong understanding of Alberta human rights legislation, disability insurance programs, and workplace accommodation obligations.
  • Experience managing disability claims in a unionized or safety-sensitive environment is considered an asset.
  • CDMP, CRTWC, CPHR, or a related professional designation is considered an asset.
