Position Summary

Position: Assistant Controller, Client Success

Reports to: Associate Director, Client Success and Finance Transformation

Status: Permanent, full-time (40 hours per week)

Location: Work from home within Canada

Reporting to the Associate Director, Client Success and Finance Transformation, the Assistant Controller works within a team of accountants and bookkeepers to support a portfolio of social purpose clients on their financial wellness journeys.

The Assistant Controller, Client Success helps ensure the accuracy and completeness of clients’ financial information and reporting and supports regulatory compliance, budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management and audit coordination. The role also reviews the work of other team members and provides coaching, training and mentorship that strengthens the capacity of both the client service team and the organizations we serve.

This position combines strong technical accounting skills with sound judgment, curiosity, clear communication and a genuine commitment to client success. Because our services are delivered remotely, the successful candidate must have an appropriate home workspace and be comfortable building relationships and collaborating with clients and colleagues virtually. Occasional travel within Canada may be required.

Who You Are

You are a CPA with several years of progressively responsible accounting experience, whether gained in public practice, industry or the social purpose sector. You are looking for work that combines strong technical accounting with authentic client relationships and lasting organizational impact.

You enjoy solving puzzles, rolling up your sleeves and putting the pieces together in practice, not only in theory. You understand that getting into bookkeeping details is sometimes part of the work and can be essential to understanding what is happening in a client’s financial systems.

You care about client success and want your work to support organizations advancing important missions. You understand that financial transformation can be complex and are prepared to approach challenging situations with patience, sound judgment and persistence.

What You Bring

We recognize that strong candidates may have gained their experience through different career paths. You do not need to meet every item under “Nice to have” to apply.

Required

  • A Canadian CPA designation in good standing.
  • Several years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including experience with audit or assurance engagements in public practice.
  • Hands-on, full-cycle accounting experience, including journal entries, reconciliations, month-end processes and preparation or review of financial reports.
  • Experience managing competing priorities and deadlines across multiple clients, organizations or business units.
  • Experience reviewing the work of junior team members and providing clear instructions, coaching and constructive feedback.
  • Strong client-facing communication skills and the ability to build respectful, collaborative relationships.
  • Sound professional judgment, attention to detail and the ability to investigate and resolve accounting issues.
  • Confidence learning and working across different accounting systems and digital tools in a remote environment.
  • Cultural awareness, humility and a commitment to continuous learning when working with people from different communities, backgrounds and lived experiences.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with charities, nonprofits, First Nations governments, Indigenous communities or Indigenous organizations.
  • Knowledge of fund accounting, restricted contributions, funder reporting or the financial and reporting environments in which social purpose organizations operate.
  • Experience preparing budgets, forecasts, cash-flow projections and budget-to-actual reporting.
  • Experience working directly with executive directors, senior leaders, boards of directors or finance committees.
  • Experience strengthening financial policies, internal controls, procedures or finance-team structures.
  • Experience onboarding new clients or managing client engagements, projects, scope and budgets.
  • Experience working successfully as part of a fully remote team.
  • Familiarity with a range of cloud-based accounting, reporting and workflow systems.

We know that many technical skills can be taught. We have built a learning library and an onboarding process to support your success. What matters to us is your desire to learn and grow, your openness to change and the perspective you bring to our team.

What We Offer

Humanity Financial is unlike most accounting firms. We do not complete year-end corporate tax returns or audits, so there is no traditional tax season. We fully support work-life balance and provide opportunities to build a meaningful career without a conventional track to partnership.

Our team members care deeply about one another and our clients. We foster collaborative relationships, lead with kindness and do not shy away from courageous conversations. We support and celebrate one another in doing our best work; ego and internal competition are not particularly valued here.

Total Compensation

The starting salary for the Assistant Controller, Client Success is $88,474, with the salary band extending to $127,181 per year. Assistant Controllers, Client Success typically start at (or near) the beginning of the salary band and receive three weeks of annual vacation plus additional paid time off. Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Equity, diversity and inclusion are central to Humanity’s vision, mission and values. We are committed to identifying and removing barriers in our employment practices and creating a workplace where people from different backgrounds, identities and lived experiences can contribute and thrive.

Our Recruitment Process

We strive to be consistent in how we assess applicants and transparent about what candidates can expect.

  • We do not use an automated applicant tracking system. A person will read your resume and application email.
  • Following a successful application review, the first step is a phone conversation to establish a connection, learn more about your experience and discuss administrative details.
  • The next step is a 45-60 -minute video interview with one or two members of our team. This discussion explores your experience, approach and alignment with our work and culture.
  • Candidates who continue will participate in a 60-minute video interview with two Associate Directors, Client Success and Finance Transformation. This is a further opportunity to explore mutual fit and learn about the day-to-day work.
  • You are encouraged to ask questions at every stage.
