Job description

Where design meets opportunity, and careers are built to last.

Averton is an experienced, award winning homebuilder, community developer and construction management company. We are looking for a Bookkeeper and Office Administrator to join our accounting team at our Vaughan head office.

This role has two parts. The main part is bookkeeping: you keep the accounting records accurate, current and organized. The second part is office administration: you run the front desk, support new and departing employees, and keep the office working.

Full time, in person at our Vaughan office, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Bookkeeping and accounting

  • Complete bank and balance sheet reconciliations. Find the cause of each difference and prepare corrections for review.
  • Support month end close with schedules, reconciliations and organized supporting documents.
  • Keep intercompany and project accounting records accurate for multiple entities and projects.
  • Process supplier and subcontractor invoices. Check the supporting documents and approvals, and code each cost to the correct entity, project and account.
  • Find missing approvals, duplicate charges and unusual transactions before payment. Resolve them with internal teams and vendors.
  • Prepare payment batches for review and approval. Keep vendor records current and answer routine payment questions.
  • Record receipts and other transactions. Keep accounts receivable records current and follow up on outstanding balances.
  • Support expense processing and tax filing work when assigned.
  • Keep procedures current. Report problems early, with a proposed next step.

Front desk and office administration

  • Cover the front desk. Greet visitors, answer and direct calls, receive deliveries and help with routine office requests.
  • Coordinate administrative onboarding and offboarding. Collect forms, arrange approved equipment and account setup, prepare workspaces and track completion with the hiring manager.
  • Set up workstations and help with routine software and equipment problems. Send problems you cannot fix to our external IT provider.
  • Prepare routine correspondence, maintain files and help the accounting team track recurring deadlines.
  • Support company events, meetings and team initiatives.

What you bring

  • 5 or more years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, including reconciliations and month end support.
  • A diploma or certificate in accounting or bookkeeping, or equal practical experience. A CPA designation is not required.
  • Experience in construction, real estate, project costing or multiple entities is an asset.
  • Experience with Constellation Homebuilder Newstar is an asset.
  • Strong Excel skills and comfort with accounting software and electronic document systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and discretion. You handle financial and employee information in confidence.
  • A professional and friendly manner at the front desk and on the phone.

How the role works

  • You work closely with the accounting team, project managers, estimating and construction staff.
  • You prepare and process transactions within set procedures. Payment release, banking changes, material adjustments and accounting policy decisions stay with designated approvers.

What success looks like

  • Invoices and transactions are accurate and on time.
  • Reconciliations and close tasks are complete by the deadline, with each difference explained.
  • Records are easy to find and approvals are complete.
  • New employees have their forms, workspace and equipment ready on day one.
  • The front desk and office requests are handled reliably.
  • Problems are reported early and avoidable errors are rare.

Why join Averton

  • Competitive base salary
  • Extended health benefits
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 2 weeks vacation to start
  • RRSP matching

You join a team that values strong relationships, innovation and quality, with real opportunity to grow.
