What a day at EXP has in store for you

Bridge Planning, Assessment and Design

  • Lead bridge and transportation structure assignments through planning, structural assessment, preliminary engineering, detailed design, tendering, rehabilitation, replacement, and construction support.

  • Lead or oversee structural analysis, modelling, design calculations, drawings, condition assessments, field investigations, and rehabilitation strategies.

  • Develop practical and constructible structural options that consider foundations, hydraulics and scour, durability, staging, traffic accommodation, lifecycle performance, and project risk.

  • Prepare and review design criteria, technical reports, drawings, specifications, special provisions, quantities, cost estimates, and tender documentation.

Integrated Project Delivery

  • Coordinate bridge designs with highway geometry, grading, geotechnical, hydrotechnical, drainage, environmental, utility, right-of-way, traffic, electrical, and construction staging requirements.

  • Provide early structural input during functional planning, corridor development, options evaluation, and constructability review.

  • Provide bridge engineering support during tendering and construction, including technical inquiries, structural submittals, shop drawings, construction liaison, and contract administration support, as applicable.

  • Participate in construction, post-construction, warranty, or bridge inspections where required by the assignment and consistent with the individual’s qualifications.

Technical Leadership and Quality Control

  • Provide senior technical leadership and oversight for bridge and structural engineering deliverables.

  • Perform and document Quality Control reviews of bridge design and tender deliverables.

  • Coordinate responses to interdisciplinary, constructability, and independent review comments.

  • Review and authenticate engineering work for which you accept professional responsibility and are competent to practice.

  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers, EITs, technicians, and designers, and support workload planning and assignment of technical tasks.

  • Advance internal standards, design tools, lessons learned, and best practices for bridge design, assessment, rehabilitation, and construction support.

Clients, Projects and Practice Development

  • Build and maintain relationships with provincial, municipal, contractor, and transportation sector clients.

  • Support proposals, pursuits, technical approaches, schedules, budgets, fee estimates, and work plans.

  • Help identify and pursue bridge design, rehabilitation, inspection, construction support, and multidisciplinary transportation opportunities.

  • Represent EXP in client meetings, technical presentations, and industry activities.

  • Help define team development and recruitment priorities as the Western Canadian bridge practice grows.

What your experience looks like

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with APEGA, with the ability to take professional responsibility for Alberta engineering work.

  • Minimum 15 years of progressively responsible bridge and structural engineering experience, including demonstrated leadership of bridge design assignments and multidisciplinary project delivery.

  • Demonstrated experience in bridge analysis, design, rehabilitation, assessment, tender preparation, and construction support.

  • Strong knowledge of CSA S6 and applicable Canadian bridge design standards and specifications.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead complete bridge work packages and manage technical scope, quality, schedule, budget, risk, and multidisciplinary interfaces.

  • Proficiency with bridge analysis software such as MIDAS, CSiBridge, SAP2000, or comparable tools.

  • Strong technical writing, communication, mentoring, coordination, client service, and business development skills.

Preferred Experience and Assets

  • Alberta TEC bridge experience (major bridges, standard bridges, bridge-sized culverts, retaining walls, and sign-support structures) is strongly preferred; comparable provincial transportation experience will also be considered.

  • TEC Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (BIM) Class B or higher certification is considered an asset.

  • Experience with contract administration and construction liaison support.

  • Credentials or experience related to structural steel, welding, concrete, or precast/prestressed concrete fabrication and inspection.

  • Knowledge of AASHTO or AREMA requirements where applicable to anticipated project work.
