Job description

Who We Are:

Every transaction matters. Every Canadian matters. At Interac, we protect both — driving trust, security, and inclusion, so our digital economy thrives.

Founded in 1984, Interac connects Canadians through secure digital payments, advanced identity verification and industry-leading fraud protection. Connecting banks, businesses, and individuals, Interac enables millions to send, receive, and manage money safely and effortlessly every day — across both digital and physical environments.

As the backbone of Canada’s financial ecosystem, Interac facilitates over 20 million transactions daily, supported by trusted partnerships with government and financial institutions. Consistently ranked as Canada’s most reputable financial technology brand, Interac is deeply embedded in the daily lives of Canadians.

Who You Will Work With:

Reporting to the Leader, Cloud Operations, the Senior Specialist, Cloud Operations provides senior-level AWS platform engineering expertise to operate, support, and continuously improve Interac’s AWS environments. The role is hands-on across AWS platform services, Terraform and Infrastructure as Code, automation, observability, resiliency, incident troubleshooting, platform lifecycle management, and production operations, with a strong focus on engineering reliable and repeatable cloud operations for critical services.

You will set the patterns other teams build on, own the controls that keep the platform safe by default, and hold the technical gate on what is accepted into production. You will operate across both build and run functions, partnering with Architecture, Security, Cloud Platforms, DevOps, Risk, and Product Teams — influencing outcomes in repositories and teams you do not own.

This position requires deep expertise in multi-account AWS platform engineering, Terraform, policy-as-code, cloud security, automation engineering, observability, and resiliency engineering.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead hands-on AWS operational engineering across Interac’s cloud environments, with responsibility for Terraform-based infrastructure automation, production reliability, observability, resiliency, incident troubleshooting, environment health, and continuous engineering improvements that enable stable and scalable cloud operations.
  • Use AWS and Terraform expertise to automate and maintain cloud infrastructure, detect and remediate configuration drift, strengthen operational controls, and continuously improve the reliability, resiliency, and supportability of production environments.
  • Define and enforce the change-control model for cloud infrastructure: pipeline-mediated Terraform execution, peer-reviewed pull requests, and no manual privileged change in production.
  • Hold the technical gate on operational readiness — lead Operational Readiness Reviews and issue a documented, evidence-based go / no-go recommendation for production onboarding, including explicit and named acceptance of any residual risk.
  • Own the operational health and ongoing engineering of Interac’s multi-account AWS environments, using AWS and Terraform expertise to monitor, troubleshoot, automate and improve shared cloud services, networking, workload environments, resiliency and overall production stability.
  • Provide senior AWS engineering expertise across production operations, using deep knowledge of AWS, Terraform and cloud infrastructure to troubleshoot complex issues, support workload onboarding, improve operational readiness, and drive resolution of critical service incidents.
  • Deliver security automation across the estate, including automated detection and remediation of non-compliant resources, IAM policy validation and least-privilege analysis, continuous compliance and configuration drift monitoring, and automated secret and encryption key lifecycle management.
  • Deliver reliability automation across the estate, including self-healing recovery of failed resources, automated service recovery and failover, health-based workload replacement, auto-scaling optimization, and automated backup validation and restoration testing.
  • Deliver operational automation across the estate, including zero-touch provisioning and deployment pipelines, automated patching and environment lifecycle management, and event-driven workflows using AWS Lambda, Event Bridge, Step Functions, and Systems Manager.
  • Define recovery objectives (RTO/RPO), resiliency patterns, and platform recovery strategies for critical payment workloads, and lead chaos engineering, disaster recovery, and business continuity testing — driving remediation of what those exercises expose.
  • Implement and evolve observability across workloads, infrastructure, and platform services — monitoring, alerting, distributed tracing, logging, dashboards, and service health frameworks — and define and track service-level indicators, service-level objectives, and error budgets that drive prioritization with service owners and reduce operational toil.
  • Lead major incident response, problem management, and root cause analysis, ensuring corrective actions are engineered and verified.
  • Drive adoption of AI-enabled operations — intelligent automation of operational workflows, AI-driven incident detection, root cause analysis and predictive monitoring, and AI-assisted knowledge management — with clear guardrails on what AI is permitted to action autonomously.
  • Ensure platform patterns, modules, and guardrails produce cost-attributable, appropriately sized infrastructure by default, and partner with the Cloud Operations FinOps specialist to convert cost findings into engineered change without compromising reliability or security.
  • Provide rotating 24/7 production engineering support for Cloud Operations, acting as a senior escalation point for complex AWS infrastructure and service issues and driving timely service restoration, technical troubleshooting and permanent remediation.

What You Bring:

  • 7+ years of experience in AWS Cloud Engineering, Cloud Operations, Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering, or DevOps.
  • Strong expertise in designing and operating enterprise multi-account AWS environments — AWS Organizations, Control Tower, Service Control Policies, centralized networking, and centralized logging.
  • Strong experience with Terraform at scale: reusable module design, state and workspace strategy, and pipeline-mediated execution (Terraform Cloud/Enterprise, Atlantis, or equivalent), alongside GitOps and DevSecOps practice.
  • Strong depth across the AWS service domains that underpin the platform:
    • Compute and containers — EC2, ECS/Fargate, EKS, Lambda
    • Networking — VPC, Transit Gateway, Route 53, CloudFront, ALB/NLB, PrivateLink, hybrid connectivity
    • Data and messaging — RDS, DynamoDB, MSK, SNS/SQS, EventBridge
    • Security and governance — IAM, KMS, Secrets Manager, Organizations, Control Tower, Config, CloudTrail, GuardDuty
    • Operations — Dynatrace, Systems Manager, Step Functions, ServiceNow
  • Experience developing automation solutions using Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar scripting languages.
  • Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins, or equivalent technologies.
  • Strong understanding of cloud security operations, and automated compliance enforcement, including policy-as-code.
  • Experience supporting highly available, mission-critical production services in regulated environments, including evidencing controls to audit or regulators.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive technical standards across teams you do not manage, and to make and defend a documented risk decision.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, written communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – you can seamlessly communicate with technical and business teams, stakeholders, clients, and partners.
  • You are a self-starter and a collaborative team player, committed to continuous learning, growth, and development.
  • Eligibility to work for Interac Corp. in Canada in a full-time capacity.

Nice to Have

  • AWS Solutions Architect Professional.
  • AWS Security Specialty.
  • Experience with AIOps, generative AI platforms, and AI-enabled operational tooling.
  • HashiCorp Terraform Associate or Professional certification.
  • Experience in financial services, payment processing, or other highly regulated industries, including familiarity with PCI DSS, SOC 2, or OSFI B-13 expectations.
  • Experience supporting cloud migrations, modernization initiatives, and large-scale transformation programs.
