Job description

Commissioning Engineer

Ottawa, Ontario | Full-Time | Building Consulting | Engineering & Commissioning

About the Opportunity: We’re partnering with a well-established consulting engineering firm that is looking to add a Commissioning Engineer to its growing Ottawa team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer or building systems professional who wants to develop their career within the commissioning and building performance space, while gaining exposure to a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, healthcare, and other complex building projects.

If you’re looking for a role where you can continue building your technical expertise, work directly with clients and project teams, and eventually take on greater project ownership and leadership responsibilities, this could be an excellent next step.

The Role: You’ll be involved throughout the building lifecycle, working closely with owners, architects, contractors, engineers, and other project stakeholders to ensure building systems are designed, installed, tested, and operating as intended.

You’ll have the opportunity to work on both new construction and existing-building projects, giving you exposure to a wide range of mechanical and building systems and the opportunity to develop a well-rounded commissioning skill set.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead and support commissioning activities for commercial, institutional, healthcare, and other building projects.
  • Review mechanical and building system designs to identify potential issues and commissioning requirements.
  • Develop and review commissioning plans, specifications, reports, and documentation.
  • Perform functional testing and verification of HVAC and building systems.
  • Review equipment operation, controls sequences, and Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Conduct site visits and inspections throughout construction and commissioning.
  • Work with contractors and consultants to identify deficiencies and develop solutions.
  • Participate in testing, troubleshooting, and system optimization.
  • Support existing-building commissioning and building performance assessments.
  • Identify opportunities for improved energy efficiency and building performance.
  • Work directly with clients and project stakeholders to communicate findings and recommendations.
  • Assist with energy modelling, energy assessments, and sustainability initiatives where applicable.
  • Develop strong relationships with clients, contractors, and consulting teams.
  • Take increasing ownership of projects as your experience develops.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Building Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of Industry experience
  • Experience within building mechanical systems, HVAC, controls, energy management, or commissioning.
  • Experience with commercial, institutional, healthcare, or other building projects.
  • Understanding of HVAC systems, controls, and Building Automation Systems.
  • Strong understanding of building mechanical systems and how they operate together.
  • Experience conducting site reviews, inspections, testing, or troubleshooting is an asset.
  • P.Eng., or CET, or eligibility for professional registration is an asset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable working directly with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to work independently while knowing when to collaborate and ask questions.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Interest in developing a long-term career within commissioning, building performance, and energy efficiency.

Grow Your Career in Commissioning: This is a great opportunity for someone looking to establish or further develop their career within commissioning and building performance. You’ll gain exposure to different systems, project types, and stages of the building lifecycle.

Work on a Diverse Project Portfolio: Rather than being limited to one type of building, you’ll have the opportunity to work across:

  • Healthcare
  • Institutional
  • Commercial
  • Education
  • Multi-Residential
  • Government
  • Mixed-Use
  • Recreation and community facilities

Build Your Technical Expertise: You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and professionals while developing a deeper understanding of how building systems operate in the real world — from design and construction through testing, optimization, and ongoing performance.

Client & Project Exposure: The role provides significant interaction with owners, contractors, consultants, and other project stakeholders, allowing you to develop the communication and project management skills that are important for progressing into more senior positions.

Long-Term Career Growth: For someone who is ambitious and interested in taking on more responsibility, there is an opportunity to grow into greater project ownership, client management, and leadership responsibilities as your experience develops.

This opportunity would be particularly well suited to someone who enjoys understanding how buildings actually perform, rather than focusing solely on design.

Whether you come from a mechanical engineering, HVAC, controls, energy, or building systems background, this could be a strong career move if you’re looking to develop a specialized skill set while gaining exposure to a diverse range of projects.

If you’re looking for your next step and want the opportunity to learn, grow, work on interesting buildings, and develop toward greater project and leadership responsibility, we’d love to hear from you.

To apply, please send your resume to Jennifer Ramos at [email protected] or Zeeshan Ali at [email protected]for a confidential discussion. Please note that only those with relevant industry experience will be contacted.
