Compliance Specialist

Billyard Insurance Group (BIG) is a leading force in the insurance industry, committed to attracting the best insurance professionals and equipping them with cutting-edge technology, tools, and unwavering support to thrive in today's dynamic insurance landscape. With a strong presence and continuous growth, we boast over 80 locations across Canada. Our dedication to excellence has earned us prestigious recognition, including being featured on Insurance Business Canada's esteemed Top Brokerages list for the past three years and securing a spot as one of Canada's Top Growing Companies in the renowned Globe and Mail's Report on Business. At Billyard Insurance Group, our mission is clear: to establish a nationally recognized insurance brokerage brand that empowers brokers and leads the digital insurance revolution.

We are looking for an experienced Compliance Specialist to join our Head Office team. Reporting to the Manager, Insurance Compliance, this role is responsible for helping ensure our Personal Lines insurance operations meet regulatory requirements, market expectations, and BIG's internal standards.

This is an opportunity for an experienced insurance professional who understands brokerage operations from the inside and knows how to apply that knowledge to complex compliance matters. You'll review escalated cases, navigate regulatory and market issues, identify risk, and provide thoughtful recommendations that protect our clients and the organization. You'll also play an important role in strengthening our policies, processes, training, and quality assurance practices as BIG continues to grow.

What does a Compliance Specialist do?

As a Compliance Specialist, you will:

  • Review Personal Lines insurance operations to identify compliance risks and ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, market guidelines, and internal standards.
  • Manage complex escalations involving branches, markets, regulatory matters, client concerns, and Errors & Omissions (E&O) cases.
  • Conduct end-to-end reviews of escalated cases and provide clear, well-supported recommendations to the Compliance Committee.
  • Review and respond to regulatory inquiries and complaints and support the resolution and follow-through of compliance matters.
  • Assist in developing and improving policies, procedures, and quality assurance practices that strengthen compliance across the organization.
  • Analyze compliance data and operational trends to identify emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Partner with clients, Underwriting, Audit, and other teams to resolve issues and support consistent compliance practices.
  • Manage and report compliance incidents or breaches, ensuring concerns are addressed promptly, appropriately, and with accountability.
  • Stay current on regulatory and industry changes affecting Personal Lines and translate requirements into practical guidance for the business.
  • Develop compliance training and prepare reporting for management on key trends, risks, outcomes, and opportunities for improvement.

Does this sound like you?

You'll be successful in this role if you:

  • Have strong knowledge of Personal Lines insurance, brokerage operations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply sound judgment when assessing compliance risks and resolving complex issues.
  • Analyze information effectively and identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, Brokers, regulators, and internal teams.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential matters with integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Collaborate effectively across teams to solve problems and achieve shared goals.
  • Are highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing competing priorities.
  • Take ownership of issues and follow them through to resolution.
  • Adapt quickly to changing regulations, requirements, and business needs.
  • Look for practical ways to improve processes, service, and efficiency.

Qualifications

Required

  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 7 years of proven experience in the insurance industry in a related role or function, with experience relevant to Personal Lines insurance operations, underwriting, client servicing, and/or compliance.
  • An active RIBO licence in good standing.

Assets

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Insurance, Economics, Law, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • A professional insurance designation such as:

  • Experience developing or implementing compliance policies and procedures.
  • Experience with insurance quality assurance or audit processes.
  • Experience working with compliance monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Experience managing insurer/market relationships in a compliance context.
  • Experience creating and facilitating compliance training.

What We Offer
