Job description

The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking an electrical engineer to join our Canadian team. In this hybrid role, you will support the electrical group, working as part of multidisciplinary project teams to provide electrical engineering and related technical expertise. Work will include integrating process, mechanical, and control requirements into comprehensive electrical systems. This person will also be responsible for managing projects, coaching and mentoring less-experienced staff, providing technical leadership, managing teams to meet clients' needs, and conducting business development activities. The work may involve short-term, out-of-town assignments.

A successful person in this role will have strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The ideal candidate for this position is intrinsically motivated and emphasizes client service. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their technical ability and project management expertise to a variety of projects. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: design and analysis will include preparing plans and specifications, writing reports, and developing cost estimations as well as the design of power and controls from the ground up. The work will be related to industrial processing facilities, power plants, mining facilities, and municipal water and wastewater facilities.

  • Project management: proposal development including defining work scopes, deliverables, schedules, and budget. Lead planning, coordinating, and executing projects. Ensure project milestones are met and provide regular updates to team members and clients.

  • Staff development: support the growth and development of team members.

  • Collaboration: build and sustain strong relationships with clients and internal teams. Collaborate across disciplines to align technical approaches with client goals while contributing to a positive, inclusive team culture.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr’s Calgary, Alberta, or Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, offices.

  • Travel expectation: up to 10–15 percent domestic fieldwork.

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites. Safety training will be provided prior to being given work assignments on these sites. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

  • Experience: at least 10 years of related experience working in a design capacity on projects directly related to job responsibilities described above.

    • Experience in an industrial production environment such as mining and/or minerals processing, power plants, petroleum refining, or chemical production facilities.

    • Working knowledge of codes, standards, laws, and regulations applicable to the project assignments described above.

  • Licenses/certifications: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng.) license in at least one U.S. or Canadian jurisdiction.

  • Software: Microsoft Office.

  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship from Barr Ltd., now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Experience with AutoCAD.

  • Experience with SKM Power Tools or E-Tap software for coordination and arc flash studies.

  • Client-relationship and business-development skills.

  • Experience with Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley PLC and HMI programming software.

  • Experience with start-up/commissioning of industrial projects.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $120,000–$160,000 CAD annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance.
