Position Overview:
Morgan Construction is a privately held heavy civil, mining and infrastructure contractor operating across Canada and the US. We run a large mixed fleet of Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi and Deere equipment across oil sands and mining sites, and we build projects alongside more than 40 Indigenous business partners. Our Equipment Maintenance team keeps that fleet working, and we're looking for a hands-on welding leader to join it.
Reports to: General Foreman, Maintenance
Coverage Area: Based at Poplar Creek, supporting Morgan sites across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo
Key Opportunity: Shape welding standards across a large heavy equipment fleet. Based at our Poplar Creek shop and supporting Morgan sites across the Wood Buffalo region, you'll lead the welding crew from the floor: PM inspections, structural and wear repairs, outside vendors and failure analysis, and the shop standards everyone works to. Your job is to keep structural and wear problems from turning into downtime: fix it right the first time, document it properly, and make sure we learn from every failure.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the crew. Assign work and set priorities, run toolbox talks and handovers, and coach welders and apprentices on technique and quality. Review repairs before units go back to service, and hold contract welders to the same standard.
- PMs and planned welding. Build structural and wear inspections into the PM program, turn findings into planned work, and package repairs so each unit is down once.
- Repairs on machinery. Carry out and supervise structural, wear and component repairs on mobile equipment, following OEM repair procedures. Make sure every job starts with proper isolation and hot work controls.
- Heat treat. Identify base materials and set preheat, interpass and post-weld heat treat requirements. Control cracking risk on high-strength steel, wear plate and castings. Arrange off-site heat treat and NDT when needed.
- Wear packages. Own the wear program for buckets, bodies, blades and liners: liner, hardfacing and wear-button setups, inspection intervals and change-out criteria. Track wear life by application and work with Parts on stocking.
- Off-site vendors. Scope and quote work for machine shops, line boring, heat treat, NDT and fabrication vendors. Inspect returned work, and hold vendors to scope, quality, schedule and invoiced hours.
- Failure analysis. Find the failure mode before you fix it. Treat repeat failures as root-cause problems, document findings, and recommend corrective action.
- Best practices and templates. Develop shop standards and build and maintain the crew's templates: inspection checklists, weld repair reports, wear package specs, failure analysis reports, vendor scopes and hot work pre-job checklists.
- CMMS. Create, assign and close work orders, and record labour, parts and vendor costs to the right unit or job. Write complete repair histories with photos and records, and use CMMS data to spot repeat failures and track wear life.
- Safety. Lead hot work safety for the crew. Stop unsafe work, and report serious structural failures to HSE right away.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Experience leading or lead-handing a welding crew
- Hands-on CMMS experience (SAP PM, JD Edwards, Maximo or similar), including creating and closing work orders, recording labour and parts, and pulling equipment history
- Working knowledge of structural repair, heat treat requirements, wear materials and hardfacing
- Ability to read drawings and repair procedures, write scopes, and build practical templates and reports
- Basic understanding of job costing, including unit charge vs. job charge
- A strong safety mindset and the confidence to hold the line on quality
Preferred:
- Red Seal Journeyperson Welder
- Heavy equipment or mining equipment maintenance experience
- Current CWB tickets
