At Alstom, we build what millions depend on daily - rail transportation systems that can't afford to fail. We're more than 85,000 people worldwide creating the industry's most diverse portfolio: high-speed trains, metros, trams, maintenance services and integrated systems.
More Than a Job: A Mission
We are seeking a visionary General Manager Operations to lead one of our most significant operational mandates. You will be responsible for Alstom’s largest operations contract and Canada’s largest metropolitan rail operation, leading an organization of approximately 800–850 employees.
You will guide multidisciplinary teams, drive operational excellence and build a strong culture around safety, employee engagement, customer service and performance. This is a highly visible leadership role requiring someone who can connect with frontline employees, navigate complex operational challenges and ensure the reliable service our passengers and customers depend on every day.
Your Role, Your Impact
- Champion a strong health and safety culture, ensuring safety remains at the heart of operational decision-making.
- Lead an organization of approximately 800–850 employees, supported by 6–8 direct reports, fostering employee engagement, accountability and retention.
- Drive operational performance by establishing clear expectations, maximizing organizational effectiveness and continuously improving service delivery.
- Build trusted customer relationships, confidently managing operational issues, complaints and challenging conversations while maintaining customer confidence.
- Provide visible, hands-on leadership by staying connected to frontline teams and understanding operational realities.
- Apply strong problem-solving and lateral-thinking skills to complex operational challenges, drawing on previous experience to make sound, timely decisions.
- Bring financial and commercial awareness to operational decisions, contributing to sustainable performance and business growth.
- Foster collaboration across functions to align people, customer expectations, operational performance and business objectives.
You'll work with sharp, committed teams solving complex challenges that shape the future of mobility, ensuring seamless integration of business and operational performance.
What You Bring
- Demonstrated experience leading large-scale operational teams, ideally with previous responsibility for 100–150+ employees or an organization of comparable complexity.
- Strong leadership across five critical areas: health and safety, employee engagement, customer management, operational performance and financial acumen.
- Experience in a complex, customer-facing operational environment where safety, reliability and service delivery are critical.
- A visible and engaging leadership style, with the ability to connect credibly with frontline employees as well as senior stakeholders.
- Strong performance management and problem-solving capabilities, supported by meaningful operational leadership experience.
- Ability to navigate challenging customer situations and build confidence through clear communication and decisive action.
- Sound commercial and financial judgment, with the ability to understand how operational decisions impact business performance and growth.
- Experience from rail, public transit, transportation, airlines, airport operations, aerospace, defence or another large-scale operational environment. Rail industry experience is an asset, but not a requirement.
How Success Is Measured
- Strength of the health and safety culture across the operation.
- Employee engagement, retention and leadership effectiveness across a large and diverse workforce.
- Consistent operational performance, reliability and achievement of strategic objectives.
- Customer confidence and the effective resolution of complex operational challenges.
- Measurable improvements in organizational effectiveness and business performance.
Alstom, A Great Place to Grow
- Take the lead of Alstom’s largest operations contract and Canada’s largest metropolitan rail operation.
- Make an impact at exceptional scale, leading an organization of approximately 800–850 employees.
- Work at the intersection of people, customers and operational performance in a highly visible leadership mandate.
- Access global expertise, leading rail technologies and opportunities for continued leadership development.
Here, progress isn't always easy but the impact is real. Because the scale is massive, the tasks are complex when the system runs, the train moves, and the city connects that feeling stays with you. And the legacy lasts.
