Job Title: Hardware Test Engineer

Job Description

The Hardware Test Engineer develops and executes test programs for next-generation vision systems and sensors intended for high-reliability and harsh environments. This role ensures electronic hardware meets design and performance requirements through hands-on testing, troubleshooting, debugging, analysis, and clear reporting. You will contribute directly to the development of advanced sensor products, including a vision system for a lunar rover, while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and development of vision system sensor products for high-reliability applications.
  • Develop comprehensive test plans and procedures to verify electronic hardware against design requirements.
  • Set up and operate lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and signal generators.
  • Test electronic hardware such as printed circuit boards (PCBs), electronic assemblies, and individual components.
  • Perform design verification and validation testing to confirm hardware meets functional and performance requirements.
  • Conduct board-level and system-level hardware testing, including design verification testing (DVT), acceptance test procedures (ATP), functional testing, EMI/EMC testing, and environmental testing.
  • Troubleshoot and debug hardware issues, investigate failures, and identify root causes in digital, analog, and mixed-signal circuitry.
  • Perform and document hardware reliability and performance analyses, including Derating Analysis, Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), and Worst-Case Analysis.
  • Prepare clear and detailed documentation of test results, test reports, and design documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware, electrical, systems, manufacturing, and other engineering teams to resolve technical issues and improve designs.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to less experienced team members, sharing best practices in hardware testing and analysis.
  • Apply design practices that support EMI/EMC compliance and reliability requirements for military, aerospace, medical, and space-related applications.
  • Follow formal configuration control methods to maintain accurate records of hardware, test procedures, and design changes.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience in hardware testing, including design verification testing (DVT), acceptance test procedures (ATP), functional testing, EMI/EMC testing, and environmental testing.
  • Strong hands-on experience with board-level and systems-level hardware testing.
  • Proficiency with analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuitry.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and debugging skills for complex electronic hardware issues.
  • Ability to perform reliability and performance analyses such as Derating Analysis, FMECA, and Worst-Case Analysis.
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of design practices for military or space industries.
  • Familiarity with radiation analysis and EEE-INST-002 standards.
  • Experience designing for EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the ability to produce clear test reports and design records.
  • Familiarity with formal configuration control methods.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet time-critical deadlines while ensuring reliable designs.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated initiative, superior problem-solving skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to evolving project requirements and technologies.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with optical and vision system design and testing.
  • Experience working in military, defense, aerospace, or medical hardware environments.
  • Experience supporting high-reliability, harsh-environment applications, including space-related systems such as lunar rover vision systems.
  • Ability to provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and team members.
  • Highly motivated team player with a collaborative mindset and strong ownership of project outcomes.

Work Environment

This role is primarily lab-based, with four days per week on-site and the possibility of working from home on Fridays. You will work hands-on with test and measurement equipment in an engineering lab environment as part of a close-knit team of approximately ten people. The setting emphasizes collaboration, rigorous testing practices, and formal configuration control. The position offers long-term employment potential, opportunities for extension or conversion, and access to interesting, cutting-edge projects such as developing a vision system for a lunar rover. The broader culture supports career advancement, steady engagement on engineering programs, and exposure to major industry players in sectors such as defense, aerospace, and advanced technology.
