As a leading Canadian architectural practice with a legacy spanning over 70 years, we are known for delivering thoughtful, innovative, and enduring design solutions across sectors and geographies.

Rooted in a deep commitment to collaboration, design excellence, and sustainability, Zeidler brings together a diverse team of professionals united by a shared purpose: to create impactful architecture that connects people and elevates the built environment.

We are currently seeking an Intermediate Designer to join our Toronto Studio. The ideal candidate brings strong design skills, a solid understanding of project coordination, and the ability to thrive in a complex, large-scale project.

Job Summary

The Intermediate Designer plays a key role in supporting and leading the design and delivery of architectural projects through all phases—from pre-design through construction administration. Working under the supervision of senior staff or the Partner in Charge, this role contributes to design excellence, technical quality, and effective project execution. It requires a well-rounded understanding of building systems, project coordination, and client engagement. The role is based fully in-office to foster direct team collaboration and strong cross-functional coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead or support the successful execution of projects across all design phases, ensuring deliverables meet quality standards and project timelines
  • Contribute to the establishment and maintenance of project budgets, schedules, and work plans.
  • Actively engage in design development, consultant coordination, and client communication throughout the duration of the project.
  • Serve as Project Manager or support senior staff in the management of scope, schedule, team deliverables, budgets, and communication, following established firm processes.
  • Support or lead preparation of proposals, fee estimates, and responses to RFPs.
  • Participate in contract review meetings and assist with risk identification and mitigation planning.

Design + Documentation

  • Participate in and support the creation of conceptual and schematic design ideas with strong graphic and presentation skills.
  • Lead or assist with the development of contract drawings and specifications, ensuring compliance with office standards, development bylaws, and applicable building codes.
  • Coordinate submission drawings for authority approvals and contribute to tender documentation packages.
  • Ensure technical quality and accuracy in design and construction documentation using Revit and CAD.
  • Support quality control efforts and internal design review processes.

Project Support + Coordination

  • Prepare and manage project documentation including meeting minutes, transmittals, and authority applications.
  • Maintain project filing systems to organize related information and correspondence.
  • Coordinate with consultants, internal teams, and municipal authorities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Assist with or manage project scheduling, resource planning, and milestone tracking using project management software.
  • Working with Senior staff, assist with or manage RAIC contracts and/or fee proposals
  • Ensure all work aligns with the firm’s Project Delivery standards, including proper use of filing systems, adherence to architectural procedures, and compliance with drawing and documentation protocols.

Team + Culture

  • Foster a collaborative, open studio environment that promotes creativity, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to junior staff, especially during early design phases.
  • Adhere to all company health and safety protocols and support a respectful and inclusive workplace.
  • Able to work in a collaborative, in-office environment (100% in-office presence required to support direct team engagement and effective cross-functional coordination).

Qualifications

  • Degree in Architecture or a related design discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • 5–10 years of professional experience in an architectural firm.
  • Registered with or actively pursuing registration with a Canadian architectural association (OAA, AAA, AIBC, etc.).
  • Strong conceptual design skills including freehand sketching, 3D modeling, and graphic presentation.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD required; knowledge of project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Deltek Vantagepoint) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local construction systems, detailing, and building codes.
  • Experience with local municipal approvals and permitting processes.
  • Proven experience managing projects with direct client engagement and coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage design fees, including budgeting and monitoring profitability.
  • Experience in staffing planning, task allocation, and team coordination across project phases.
  • Strong understanding of scope management, scheduling, and budget adherence.
  • LEED® AP, Passive House Designer, or other sustainability accreditations preferred.
