We're a not-for-profit mental health centre based in Calgary, with locations across Alberta. Our mission is to build good mental health and well-being so everyone can thrive in their community.

Role Summary

Wood’s Homes is a COR-certified organization seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to provide agency-wide leadership for physical and psychological safety, employee wellness, risk management, and regulatory compliance. Working closely with senior leadership, People & Culture, and operational teams, this role will strengthen safety culture, reduce organizational risk, and lead the continued development of our safety management system to maintain and build upon our COR status across all programs and locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the agency-wide health, safety, wellness, and risk management strategy, fostering a culture of physical and psychological safety across all programs and locations.
  • Develop and continuously improve safety management systems, policies, procedures, training, annual objectives, and corrective-action processes using incident trends, audits, employee input, and industry best practices.
  • Oversee incident investigations and corrective actions, together with WCB, return-to-work, stay at work, and workplace accommodation programs.
  • Identify and mitigate operational, environmental, and workplace hazards.
  • Coach leaders and employees to strengthen safety awareness and accountability, and develop training in safety leadership, hazard recognition, incident prevention, and psychological safety.
  • Lead audits, inspections, and compliance reviews; maintain relationships with regulators and industry stakeholders; and provide executive and agency-wide reporting on safety performance, risk exposure, compliance, and emerging trends.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to safety staff and internal safety auditors.
  • Support safety practices within a unionized environment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Risk Management, Disability Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum six (6) years of progressive safety leadership experience, ideally within human services or another complex, unionized, multi-site environment.
  • COR Auditor certification or experience overseeing safety management system audits.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred, other formal Health and Safety designations may be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, risk assessment, incident investigation, and psychological health and safety.
  • Demonstrated experience developing safety cultures, leading safety teams, and coaching leaders at all organizational levels.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, safety management systems, risk assessment, incident investigation, and psychological health and safety principles.
  • Strong analytical and performance-measurement skills, with the ability to translate incident, hazard, and trend data into practical risk-reduction strategies.
  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, coaching, and influencing skills, with the ability to build credibility, strengthen leadership accountability, and engage employees at all levels.

Join Wood’s Homes and help create safe, healthy, and supportive environments where exceptional treatment and safety go hand in hand.

We are committed to a workplace that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.
