  • Monitor and analyze trends and new legislation, identify potential impacts, and recommend improvements to help mitigate risk.

  • Collaborate with leaders and project teams to develop evidence-informed solutions to OHS issues using a strong understanding of organizational practices and contractor safety management principles.

  • Regularly meet with FPMO, Project Horizon & Early Works, Information Services, Plant Operations, PGCRL and other stakeholders to identify upcoming and in-progress projects.

  • Interact regularly with Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) regarding upcoming and ongoing projects.

  • Provide OHS input throughout project, renovation, maintenance and construction stages, including construction documentation, active construction and post-project review, to support compliance with applicable legislation, standards, guidelines and best practices.

  • Attend project-specific construction meetings.

  • Review contractor project-specific site safety plans and methods of procedure, as required, and identify concerns for follow-up.

  • Monitor contractor compliance with applicable health and safety requirements and standards through regular audits, and escalate significant issues as appropriate.

  • Lead and deliver orientation sessions on contractor health and safety for hospital personnel and contractors, as required.

  • Coordinate and participate in activity permit meetings, leading discussions within the position's area of expertise as required.

  • Conduct site inspections of construction projects, document contractor safety deficiencies, communicate findings to project managers, and collaborate on corrective actions.

  • Investigate reported staff health and safety concerns related to construction projects and coordinate follow-up with the appropriate stakeholders.

  • Review and maintain familiarity with SickKids hazardous substance inventory reports.

  • Support communications with external agencies (e.g., MLTSD) and liaise with subject-specific safety consultants (e.g., asbestos, lead), as required and in coordination with OHS leadership.

  • Perform other duties related to the position, as required.

Here's What You'll Need

  • University degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training and directly related experience. Professional certification - CRSP, CIH or NCSO is preferred.

  • Minimum of five years of Occupational Health and Safety experience, preferably in a healthcare setting, including at least two years of construction or contractor safety experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of Ontario OHS legislation, COR certification, and other standards and best practices, with demonstrated experience in contractor and construction safety.

  • Training in the Fundamentals of Infection Control during Construction, Renovation and Maintenance of Healthcare Facilities and effective implementation of CSA Z317 is required, or must be completed at the next available course offering after the start date.
