Job description

Build a better way to borrow

Fig is a Canadian fintech making personal lending simpler, faster, and more accessible for Canadians. We offer fully digital personal loans, helping customers apply in minutes and receive decisions quickly, without paperwork, branch visits, or long delays .

Since launching in 2023, we’ve grown quickly and earned recognition including Consumer Lender of the Year and FinTech Startup of the Year. We’re proud to be consistently ranked among Canada’s Best Workplaces, with a 4.8/5 Trustpilot rating from our customers.

Supported by Fairstone Bank of Canada and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, we combine deep lending expertise with the agility of a startup.

About the role

Fig is expanding beyond lending and building a new generation of digital banking products. We're hiring a Senior Backend Engineer, reporting to the Engineering Manager of our digital banking team, to build the backend of our new platform.

You'll own a broad backend surface: core banking services in areas such as onboarding, accounts, money movement, and risk, plus partner integrations and operational tooling for internal teams.

Our backend stack includes TypeScript, NestJS, PostgreSQL, and AWS. We use AI for software development and are moving toward more agentic ways of working. We want engineers who'll help shape how we get there.

We're a small team, so breadth matters. You'll work closely with Product, Design, Risk, Compliance, and Operations, and help set the patterns and standards that other engineers build on as we grow.

What you’ll do

Design, build, and operate the services behind our digital banking platform, from data model to production.

  • Build integrations with banking partners, payment rails, and KYC/AML providers, designed to handle retries, failures, and reconciliation.

  • Design clear, well-versioned APIs for our mobile app, web apps, and internal systems.

  • Build the back-office tools our teams use to run the platform, such as customer servicing, KYC and fraud review queues, and account changes with approval controls.

  • Make services secure and observable from day one, with robust access control, structured logging and tracing, and audit trails for sensitive actions.

  • Take part in our on-call rotation, respond to incidents, and drive follow-up improvements.

  • Partner with Product and Design to shape problems, weigh technical trade-offs, and turn priorities into achievable delivery plans.

  • Use AI tools and agents to accelerate how we design, build, test, and ship.

  • Raise the bar through sound technical design, thoughtful code review, and mentoring.

You’ll succeed here if you have

6+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise in TypeScript and Node.js backends.

  • Experience designing APIs and data models backed by relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including migrations, transactions, and query performance.

  • A track record of building and operating integrations with external systems where correctness and reliability matter.

  • Experience running production systems in a cloud environment (AWS preferred), including CI/CD, observability, and incident response.

  • Experience working with multiple software vendors, and owning vendor integration and relationship management

  • Daily use of AI coding tools, with the judgment to review and validate what they produce.

  • The ability to make pragmatic technical decisions and communicate trade-offs clearly.

  • Nice to have

  • NestJS or similar TypeScript backend framework experience

  • Fintech, lending, banking, payments, or other regulated environments (e.g. KYC/AML, PCI, SOC 2).

  • Ledgers, double-entry accounting, or money-movement systems.

  • Event-driven or asynchronous architectures (queues, outbox pattern, idempotent processing).

  • Application security practices such as OAuth/OIDC, secrets management, and encryption at rest and in transit.

  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform or CDK).

  • Helping a team adopt agentic development workflows, including the context, guardrails, and review practices that make them work.
