Lead Electrical Designer – Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls

CANUSA EPC | Engineering & Design

Ready to Take the Lead?

CANUSA EPC is looking for an experienced Lead Electrical Designer to join our growing engineering team.

We're looking for someone who brings strong technical expertise in electrical, instrumentation, and controls (EI&C) design, enjoys solving complex design challenges, and is ready to take ownership of projects while helping develop the next generation of designers.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in delivering industrial engineering projects, collaborating with experienced engineers and designers, and contributing to a team that values technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.

You don't need to have experience with every system listed below. If you have a strong background in oil and gas facility design, can confidently develop and review electrical design packages, and enjoy mentoring others, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Do

As a Lead Electrical Designer, you'll take ownership of electrical and instrumentation design deliverables across a variety of EPC projects, working closely with engineers, project managers, designers, and other technical disciplines.

Lead Electrical & Instrumentation Design

  • Independently develop detailed electrical, instrumentation, and controls construction drawing packages for oil and gas and other industrial facilities.
  • Prepare comprehensive EI&C design packages using engineering inputs such as load lists, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, and plot plans.
  • Develop electrical equipment layouts, cable and conduit routing, grounding plans, lighting layouts, and associated installation details.
  • Design electrical and instrumentation systems with consideration for safety, constructability, maintainability, and applicable codes.
  • Support power distribution, power delivery, and substation design activities as needed.

Coordinate Projects & Deliverables

  • Manage multiple design assignments while balancing project priorities, schedules, budgets, and client expectations.
  • Coordinate with engineering disciplines to ensure designs are accurate, practical, and aligned with overall project requirements.
  • Delegate design and drafting assignments appropriately while providing technical direction and support.
  • Identify design challenges early and work collaboratively to develop effective solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to technical decisions throughout project execution.

Maintain Quality & Develop the Team

  • Review and check electrical and instrumentation drawings for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of internal deliverables and provide technical feedback on vendor drawings.
  • Ensure designs align with CANUSA EPC standards, client specifications, and applicable industry codes.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve standard drawings, design details, and drafting practices.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate designers, sharing technical knowledge and supporting their professional development.

Technical Experience We're Looking For

We're looking for someone with hands-on experience developing and reviewing industrial electrical and instrumentation design packages.

Electrical Design

  • Hazardous area classification
  • Electrical equipment location plans and layouts
  • Cable schedules, cable tray layouts, and conduit routing
  • Grounding plans, duct banks, and installation details
  • Single-line diagrams and panel schedules
  • Motor starter and variable frequency drive (VFD) schematics
  • Lighting layouts and electrical heat tracing
  • Electrical equipment arrangements within industrial facilities

Instrumentation & Controls

  • Instrumentation location plans
  • I/O list development using P&IDs
  • Control panel and contactor panel design
  • Panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and loop drawings
  • Control junction box design
  • Network architecture diagrams
  • Instrumentation cable routing and installation details

Additional Experience That Would Be Valuable

  • Cable sizing, voltage drop, and conduit fill calculations
  • Overcurrent protective device (OCPD) sizing
  • Three-line diagram development
  • 3D modeling and multidisciplinary design coordination
  • Power distribution and substation design
  • Development and improvement of engineering design standards

What You'll Bring

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Approximately 10+ years of electrical, instrumentation, and controls design experience, preferably supporting oil and gas processing facilities or similar industrial environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and experience developing detailed construction drawing packages.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), API standards, and other relevant industry requirements. Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing and checking technical drawings and maintaining design quality.
  • Ability to independently manage design assignments and provide technical direction to other designers.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience mentoring junior and intermediate designers.
  • A collaborative approach and willingness to work across engineering disciplines.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, understands how their designs impact the success of a project, and enjoys being part of a team.

Why CANUSA EPC?

At CANUSA EPC, we believe great engineering starts with great people.

Our projects bring together engineers, designers, and project professionals who collaborate to deliver practical, high-quality solutions for our clients.

As part of our team, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Take meaningful ownership of challenging engineering projects.
  • Work alongside experienced professionals across multiple disciplines.
  • Contribute ideas that improve design quality, project execution, and internal processes.
  • Share your expertise while helping develop other designers.
  • Continue building your technical knowledge and leadership capabilities.
  • Be part of a team where your experience, initiative, and contributions matter.

Interested in Joining Our Team?

If you're an experienced Electrical Designer who enjoys technical challenges, takes ownership of your work, and is ready to help lead project design efforts, we encourage you to apply.

We look forward to learning more about you and what you could bring to CANUSA EPC.

CANUSA EPC is committed to providing an inclusive and respectful workplace. We welcome applications from qualified individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We appreciate the interest of all applicants; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
