Have you already built a book and a reputation in grain trading — and are you looking for the scale, autonomy and freedom to take it further? Do you love turning your read of the market into profitable trades and building long-term relationships that go well beyond a single deal? Are you the person others turn to when a trade gets complicated? If so, let’s talk.
GSL is an agricultural commodities trading company that buys, sells and arranges the transportation of grains and cereals across North America and beyond. Founded in 2009 in Montréal and part of McGill St Laurent, we’ve built our reputation on quality service, entrepreneurial grit and a commitment to a more efficient and sustainable food system. As we grow, we’re looking for a Senior Grain Trader to manage and grow a book — and to set the pace for the team around them.
What you’ll do
- Manage and grow your book. Originate, negotiate and execute grain purchase and sale contracts across North America and in export markets, driving volume, margin and long-term profitability.
- Read the market. Analyze supply and demand fundamentals, basis and freight movements, and macroeconomic trends to spot opportunities and act before the competition.
- Manage risk. Monitor positions, exposures, and counterparty and credit risk to protect margins and trade with discipline.
- Optimize logistics. Work hand in hand with the logistics and operations teams to move product efficiently by rail, truck and vessel, and make sure every trade is executed smoothly.
- Build the relationships that matter. Deepen your ties with growers, buyers and transportation partners, and represent GSL at industry conferences and trade shows.
- Raise the team’s game. Share your market knowledge and hard-earned best practices to raise the bar for the whole team, and coach less experienced traders as they build their own books.
- Help shape how we trade. Contribute to desk strategy, refine how we work, and play a central role in growing the team over time.
What we’re looking for
- At least 3 years of experience in grain (or agricultural commodity) trading, with a proven track record of building and managing a profitable book. Experience trading both the buy and sell side is preferred. Driven candidates with origination or merchandising experience who want to make the move into trading will also be considered.
- Strong origination and negotiation skills — cold calling and relationship building are second nature to you.
- Sharp commercial instincts: comfortable with market data, basis and freight economics, and disciplined risk management.
- A natural mentor who leads by example and enjoys helping the people around them grow.
- Exceptional attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership.
- Because of the territories we serve (North America), fluency in English, spoken and written, is essential; French and/or other languages are an asset.
- A degree in agriculture, business administration, economics, logistics or a related field — or equivalent experience (an asset).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and commodity trading systems.
What we offer
- Uncapped commissions (and a competitive base salary — to be confirmed) that reward the book you build.
- The freedom to run your business like an entrepreneur, backed by the resources and reputation of an established platform.
- Comprehensive group insurance and the option to contribute to an RRSP.
- Vacation from day one.
- A public transit incentive program.
- Real investment in your development — formal and informal mentorship, participation in industry conferences and associations, language tutoring, and much more.
- An entrepreneurial, team-oriented culture that values initiative. Want to learn more about us? Grain Trader at GSL and McGill St Laurent.
If you’re ready to take ownership of a book, grow a team and build your career at a company that values initiative, teamwork and excellence — this is your chance. Apply today.
This position is 100% in office. We believe that working directly with the team accelerates learning, collaboration and the development of the instincts needed to succeed in trading.
