Job description

Steel Reef is a Canadian company that gathers and redistributes potentially wasted gas to deliver the energy that powers our lives.

From our Saskatchewan roots, we have grown into a dominant player in flare gas capture, contributing to the energy transition through coal-to-gas switching to power homes, communities and industries dedicated to reducing emissions and powering potential.

Since our inception in 2012, Steel Reef has supported the energy community in capturing wasted energy, processing and distributing associated natural gas and other products, and bringing in net new energy production and distribution for homes, communities and businesses.

Focusing our efforts within the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and Bakken Resource Play, Steel Reef has become a market leader in developing the emissions-to-energy practice to supply net new energy from flare gas, a previously unavailable source.

In 2024, Steel Reef entered into multiple long-term Power Purchase Agreements with SaskPower. Following construction of additional utility-grade electricity substations and generation turbines powered by recovered flare gas, Steel Reef will provide more than 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity within Saskatchewan and North Dakota, which could power more than 100,000 homes annually.

Steel Reef operates a diverse fleet of rotating equipment and supporting infrastructure including Ariel compressors, CAT and Waukesha engines, electric motors, pumps, generators, Solar turbines, and electrical systems. The successful candidate will gain broad exposure to these assets while working closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Business Development teams.

  • Lead troubleshooting efforts, root cause failure investigations, and reliability improvement initiatives for critical equipment issues.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of maintenance strategies, preventative maintenance programs, and asset management practices.
  • Monitor and analyze equipment performance data to identify opportunities to improve reliability, reduce downtime, and optimize operating costs.
  • Develop and maintain compressor performance models and provide technical oversight of equipment performance and operating constraints.
  • Support major maintenance activities, equipment overhauls, shutdowns, and reliability-focused projects.
  • Provide technical oversight for equipment modifications through the Management of Change (MOC) process.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Projects, and Business Development teams to support equipment upgrades, facility improvements, and new project development.
  • Engage with OEMs, vendors, and service providers to resolve technical issues and evaluate improvement opportunities.
  • Promote strong safety, reliability, and risk management practices while mentoring and supporting junior engineers and technical staff.

Required Skills, Experience & Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited university. Mechanical Engineering is preferred; candidates from other engineering disciplines with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with a provincial engineering association.
  • 10+ years of practical experience supporting the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and reliability of industrial equipment within the oil and gas, midstream, power generation, or related industries.
  • Demonstrated experience with rotating equipment, including reciprocating compressors, natural gas engines, pumps, and electric motors.
  • Experience leading troubleshooting efforts, equipment failure investigations, and root cause analyses.
  • Strong understanding of maintenance and reliability principles, including preventive, predictive, and condition-based maintenance practices.
  • Experience working with CMMS platforms and maintenance data structures.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage field personnel, vendors, engineers, and leadership teams.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to operating sites, including locations within the United States.
