Join Team CARFAX as a Software Engineer
Isn't it time you bragged about where you work? At CARFAX, we do, every day. We pride ourselves on being mission-focused on helping to grow a brand built on accuracy and integrity. We care deeply about our products and our customers. We’re more than just a company: We help millions of consumers make more-informed decisions every day. We know that our teammates are our most valuable asset, and we value a balanced life while tackling challenging projects in a fast-paced environment.
At CARFAX, we build the data products that power automotive trust across North America. Our Data Technologies department owns some of the most critical internal systems at the company. This includes large-scale data enrichment pipelines, complex deterministic algorithms, internal data dashboards, vehicle data platforms, and a hybrid of cloud-native and on-prem infrastructure that ties it all together.
We are a team of engineers who care deeply about our craft. We build modern, well-tested software on real production systems that handle millions of records, and we have the autonomy to do it right the first time.

We are a team of engineers who care deeply about our craft. We build modern, well-tested software on real production systems that handle millions of records, and we have the autonomy to do it right the first time.
Our Development Culture:
Great software is built by great teams. A few things that make engineering in Data Technologies stand out:
- Test-Driven Development (TDD): Quality is non-negotiable. We write tests first and hold each other to a high bar.
- Pair Programming: We solve hard problems together and treat knowledge sharing as part of the job.
- Autonomy: Teams decide how best to design, implement, and deploy their systems. Guidance and collaboration from other teams is plentiful, but development teams are trusted with the final call.
- Agile Practices: We work in sprints, adapt quickly, and continuously look for ways to improve.
- CI & CD: We leverage build and deployment pipelines to achieve consistent and repeatable artifact creation, testing, and deployment.
- AI-Assisted Development: We use AI tooling across the engineering lifecycle including prototyping, test generation, code review, and documentation. We use it pragmatically and we own everything we ship.
- Professional Development: We set aside dedicated time weekly for self-directed learning and tech exploration.
At CARFAX, we believe in the power of teamwork and value in-person interactions so that we can collaborate and thrive together. This position will require 2 days in the London, ON office per week, subject to change with future business needs.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Write Modern, Robust Code: You'll develop reliable, testable features across our full stack including Java-based backends, React/Angular and TypeScript frontends, and large-scale data pipelines.
- Participate in Architecture and Design: You'll be involved in technology research, prototyping, and design decisions across cloud-native and distributed systems.
- Employ TDD and Continuous Integration: Tests are not optional. Quality is enforced at every stage of the pipeline.
- Mentor Peers: You'll provide technical input, contribute to architectural decisions, and help mentor the less-experienced engineers around you.
- Drive Platform Health: Security vulnerabilities, software currency, and tech debt don't fix themselves. You'll take ownership of keeping our systems healthy.
- Leverage AI Tooling: We expect engineers to use AI-assisted tools like GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, or GitLab Duo as part of their day-to-day workflow. The expectation is that you have the fundamentals to know when to trust the output and when to throw it out.
- Engage with Stakeholders: You'll work closely with Business Data Analysts, Product Owners, Leadership, and cross-functional teams to scope and deliver solutions.
What We're Looking For:
- 3+ years of hands-on Object-Oriented Programming experience with a proven track record of delivering scalable, production-grade software solutions.
- Strong JVM background with deep experience in Java or Kotlin and Spring Boot.
- Modern frontend experience with React, or Angular, and TypeScript, building and shipping production single-page applications.
- Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining robust, end-to-end data pipelines that support real-time and batch data processing at scale.
- Solid experience developing and deploying applications in cloud environments, with a focus on scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Strong hands-on experience with NoSQL and/or relational databases, with the ability to design efficient data models and optimize query performance at scale.
- Strong proficiency with modern CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred), including branching strategies, automated builds, and continuous deployment workflows.
- A genuine commitment to TDD, unit testing, and integration testing. Not just knowing what they are but actively doing them.
- Experience mentoring less experienced peers, contributing to technical decisions, and helping raise the bar for your team.
- A strong team player and clear communicator who thrives in collaborative environments, takes ownership of deliverables independently, and can articulate technical concepts, project requirements, and architectural decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Proficiency with big data technologies such as Apache Spark and Hadoop, with experience processing and analyzing large-scale datasets in distributed computing environments.
- Hands-on experience with core AWS services including Lambda, S3, SQS, and SNS, along with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK).
- GraphQL experience, particularly with AWS AppSync or similar.
- Kubernetes workload management or administration experience.
- Exposure to multi-region cloud architectures and cross-account IAM.
- Experience with MongoDB Atlas and MySQL.
- A working understanding of how AI and ML systems consume data, including pipeline design for ML workloads, model input requirements, and how engineering teams support data science functions.
- Demonstrated experience applying AI techniques and technologies to solve real-world business problems, including familiarity with natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, or other AI domains, along with experience integrating AI-powered capabilities into enterprise applications.
