About the Opportunity
Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineering Lead / Architect to join a product-focused engineering organization operating within a highly regulated environment.
This is a hands-on technical leadership position for someone who enjoys remaining close to the code while also providing direction and mentorship to a small software development team.
The successful candidate will have strong software development and architecture experience, ideally gained within an organization that designs, develops, and manufactures physical products. Experience within medical devices is preferred.
Candidates coming from aerospace, defence, automotive, industrial automation, robotics, nuclear, transportation, electronics manufacturing, or another regulated product environment will also be considered.
The role will support and guide a team of approximately three software developers while working closely with embedded/firmware, engineering, quality, product, and other cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership and day-to-day guidance to a small team of software developers.
Remain hands-on with software development, including coding, architecture, code reviews, troubleshooting, and complex technical problem-solving.
Lead software architecture, system design, integration, testing, deployment, commercialization, and sustaining activities.
Review software designs and code to ensure quality, maintainability, reliability, and adherence to established engineering standards.
Help establish priorities, allocate development resources, manage project timelines, and ensure technical deliverables meet project requirements.
Work closely with embedded, firmware, hardware, product, quality, and other engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
Support software documentation and development activities within a structured and regulated quality environment.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes, testing practices, tooling, CI/CD, and software quality.
Support production and field issues while contributing to problem-solving across both new and mature products.
Mentor developers and help strengthen the team's technical capabilities, development practices, and overall performance.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
10+ years of software development experience with strong hands-on technical depth.
Previous experience providing technical leadership, mentorship, or direction to software developers. Formal people-management experience is an asset but is not required.
Strong experience with C#, C++, .NET, WPF and/or MVC.
Strong software architecture, system design, integration, code review, testing, debugging, and deployment experience.
Experience developing software that forms part of a commercially manufactured product or complex engineered system.
Experience working within a regulated, safety-critical, quality-controlled, or highly structured engineering environment.
Experience with Git/GitLab, CI/CD pipelines, version control, and modern software development practices.
Experience developing within Windows and/or Linux environments.
Strong understanding of software quality, testing, documentation, traceability, and controlled development practices.
Ability to work effectively across software, hardware, firmware, quality, product, and other engineering functions.
Strong communication, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving capabilities.
Preferred Experience
Experience within medical devices would be highly valued; however, candidates from other regulated product-development environments are strongly encouraged to apply.
Additional assets include:
IEC 62304, ISO 13485, IEC 60601, ISO 14971, or comparable regulated development standards.
Health Canada, FDA, EMA, or other product regulatory frameworks.
Aerospace, defence, automotive, nuclear, industrial automation, robotics, transportation, or safety-critical product development.
Embedded software or firmware integration.
Experience working alongside electrical, mechanical, firmware, or manufacturing engineering teams.
DICOM or medical imaging systems.
Avalonia or similar cross-platform UI frameworks.
This opportunity would suit an experienced Software Architect, Technical Lead, Principal Software Engineer, Software Development Lead, Embedded Software Lead, or hands-on Software Engineering Manager looking to take ownership of a small development team while continuing to contribute technically.
