About Loblaw Companies Limited
Loblaw Companies Limited is Canada's food and pharmacy leader, with a network of corporate and independently operated stores in communities across the country. We are committed to providing Canadians with the best in food, health, and beauty, and ensuring the highest standards of food safety and operational excellence.
The Opportunity
Loblaw is seeking an experienced construction and project management professional to join our team as Technical Lead, Risk Mitigation.
This role will focus on identifying and addressing underlying building deficiencies across our food retail and food manufacturing facilities, with a focus on preventing pest entry and harbourage through durable building and construction solutions. Through hands-on site assessments, practical problem-solving and strong project management, you will lead remediation initiatives that improve building integrity, reduce facility risks and deliver lasting solutions.
You will work closely with internal teams, general contractors and trades to assess facility conditions, develop scopes of work, oversee corrective actions and ensure construction is completed to a high standard. You will also contribute to preventative design and construction standards that can be applied across our network.
This is an opportunity for a construction professional who understands how buildings come together, enjoys solving complex on-site challenges and can turn technical findings into practical, sustainable improvements.
Reporting To: National Senior Director of Food Safety
Key Responsibilities
As the Technical Lead, Risk Mitigation, you will:
- Site Assessments: Conduct on-site assessments at priority locations to identify building deficiencies, construction gaps and conditions that contribute to pest entry or harbourage. Review building envelopes, utility penetrations, service areas, refrigeration interfaces, fixtures and concealed spaces.
- Root Cause Analysis: Investigate recurring deficiencies and determine practical, long-term solutions rather than relying on temporary repairs.
- Remediation Planning: Develop scopes of work, corrective action plans and recommendations that balance durability, cost, constructability and ease of maintenance.
- Project Management: Coordinate contractors, trades and internal stakeholders, managing project timelines, budgets, resources and deliverables through to completion.
- Construction Quality Assurance: Inspect work before, during and after construction to verify workmanship, confirm deficiencies are resolved and ensure completed work meets agreed specifications.
- Prevention by Design: Provide construction expertise for new builds, renovations and facility improvements, promoting durable materials, well-sealed building interfaces, accessible service areas and designs that support cleaning and maintenance.
- Standards Development: Help establish consistent construction guidelines, scopes of work, inspection checklists and preventative design standards that can be implemented across multiple locations.
- Reporting and Continuous Improvement: Document site findings, track corrective actions and identify recurring trends and opportunities to improve construction quality and long-term facility performance.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Significant hands-on experience in general contracting, construction project management, commercial renovations or facilities project delivery.
- Strong understanding of commercial building construction, including building envelopes, wall and floor assemblies, doors, utility penetrations, refrigeration interfaces and concealed spaces.
- Proven ability to read and comprehend complex technical documents, including blueprints, schematics, and construction plans.
- Demonstrated ability to assess building conditions, identify construction deficiencies and develop practical corrective solutions.
- Proven project management skills, including scope development, contractor coordination, budgeting, scheduling and execution.
- Experience conducting construction inspections, managing deficiencies and verifying workmanship and completed repairs.
- Strong contractor and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to establish clear expectations and hold partners accountable.
- Excellent analytical, communication and problem-solving skills, with a practical, solutions-oriented mindset.
- Ability and willingness to travel regularly to stores and facilities across the network, including air travel and overnight stays as required.
- Valid Drivers License
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in grocery retail, food manufacturing, food processing or other large-scale food operations.
- Experience managing multi-site construction or renovation projects in active operating environments.
- Knowledge of building-envelope remediation, construction quality assurance and preventative design practices.
- Experience developing standardized construction details, scopes of work or quality assurance programs.
- Familiarity with commercial building systems, facility maintenance requirements and food safety considerations in facility design.
- Understanding of building conditions that can contribute to pest entry or harbourage, and construction approaches to prevent them, is an asset.
What We Offer
This is an opportunity to apply your construction expertise to a high-impact initiative that supports operational excellence across our network. You will:
- Lead practical improvement initiatives across food retail and food manufacturing facilities.
- Work collaboratively with construction, facilities, operations and other internal teams to deliver lasting solutions.
