Job description

YOU’RE enthusiastic ABOUT DESIGNING experiences PEOPLE love.

The Opportunity

The Alberta Motor Association (AMA) is looking for a creative, collaborative Intermediate UX Designer to join our Digital Experience team. You'll work alongside designers, product owners, developers, and business stakeholders to create intuitive, engaging, and user-centered digital experiences that make a meaningful difference for AMA members.

In this role, you'll bring your expertise in visual design and UX best practices to support our Insurance and Corporate Purpose portfolios. From early ideation and user flows to high-fidelity prototypes and implementation, you'll help shape digital products that balance member needs, business goals, and technical considerations.

Working closely with your UX Team Lead and senior UX designers, you'll turn complex challenges into thoughtful design solutions. You'll use customer insights, research, and feedback to create experiences that are visually compelling, accessible, consistent, and easy to use.

** This is a 12-month fixed-term position with the possibility of extension. **

The Team You’ve Been Looking For
You're not just joining a team of designers building digital products. You're joining a passionate, collaborative team dedicated to creating meaningful digital experiences for AMA's 1 million+ members.

For over a century, AMA has been making a difference in the lives of Albertans and the communities we call home. We believe great experiences start with great people, and we're committed to creating an environment where you can share ideas, grow your skills, and make a real impact.

As part of the AMA team, you'll enjoy:

  • Competitive compensation.
  • Exclusive employee discounts on travel, insurance, memberships, and more.
  • Flexible hybrid work options.
  • Vacation pay included with each pay period.

Who You Are

  • You're passionate about creating intuitive, visually compelling digital experiences and have a keen eye for detail, consistency, and polished UI design.
  • You're a strong communicator who can confidently present design concepts, explain your decisions, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment, welcome constructive feedback, share ideas openly, and contribute to your team's success.
  • You're organized, adaptable, and proactive, comfortable navigating ambiguity and managing competing priorities without compromising quality.
  • You're a creative problem-solver who understands the importance of balancing business objectives, technical constraints, great user experiences with business and regulatory requirements to deliver thoughtful design solutions. Experience working in highly regulated industries, such as insurance, is considered an asset.
  • You understand the value of design systems and have experience working with component libraries, reusable patterns, and design guidelines. You enjoy collaborating with designers and developers to evolve and improve them.
  • You understand how design translates into code and consider technical feasibility, responsive behaviour, and accessibility in your work. Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and front-end development is a strong asset.
  • You’re curious about AI and emerging design technologies and how they can enhance the design process. Experience using AI-powered tools to support ideation, prototyping, research, or design workflows is considered an asset.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • You'll collaborate with senior UX designers, product owners, developers, and business stakeholders across AMA's Insurance and Corporate Purpose portfolios, reporting to the UX Team Lead.
  • You'll transform complex business needs and user needs into intuitive digital experiences through user flows, wireframes, high-fidelity UI designs, and interactive prototypes across responsive web and mobile platforms applying creativity, visual design expertise, and UX best practices.
  • You'll contribute to the evolution of AMA's Design System by creating and refining reusable components, improving design patterns, and helping maintain consistency, accessibility, and scalability across digital products.
  • You'll work closely with developers throughout design and implementation to ensure technical feasibility, design consistency, and high-quality execution.
  • You'll support senior UX designers with user research and usability testing, applying customer feedback, qualitative and quantitative insights, and business metrics to inform design decisions.
  • You'll apply UX best practices, accessibility standards, and AMA brand guidelines to deliver user-centred experiences that balance member needs, business objectives, and regulatory requirements.

What You Bring to the Table

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in UX Design, Digital Media, Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of professional UX/UI design experience creating digital experiences across responsive websites, web applications, or mobile platforms.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in visual design, interaction design, user flows, wireframes, and high-fidelity interactive prototypes.
  • Proficiency in Figma, including Auto Layout, components, and interactive prototyping.
  • A solid understanding of UX principles, accessibility, responsive design, and user behaviour, with the ability to translate research insights and business requirements into effective design solutions.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions, incorporate feedback, and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience working with design systems and component libraries, creating reusable components, maintaining design consistency, and collaborating with developers to support scalable implementation.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to changing business needs while delivering high-quality work.

*** Please note: applicants without a portfolio of work are unlikely to be considered for this position.***

You'll Get Bonus Points For

  • Front-end development and coding: Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and front-end development principles, with experience translating designs into code or collaborating on design engineering initiatives.
  • AI-powered tools: Experience using tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Figma AI, or similar technologies to support ideation, prototyping, research, coding, or design workflows.
  • User research and testing: Experience conducting usability tests, user interviews, or collaborating with analytics teams to inform design decisions.
  • Regulated industries: Experience working in industries such as insurance, where user experience must balance legal, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
