One of Canada’s Most Trusted Investment Brands.

At Picton Mahoney Asset Management (PICTON Investments), being alternative isn’t just what we do, it’s who we are.

Founded by industry pioneer David Picton, we’ve spent 20 years challenging conventional wisdom and redefining the investing landscape. We’re more than investors we’re innovators. We challenge traditional investment mindsets, constantly pushing the boundaries to achieve our mission: To bring greater certainty to investors.

Our success is built on four guiding principles:

  • Treat investors’ money like our own.
  • Redefine the way investors invest.
  • Be human, always approachable.
  • Succeed together, one investment at a time.

These aren’t just words. They define how we think, how we invest, and how we work.

Now, we’re entering our next chapter. We’re transforming our brand and reshaping the way the world invests. If you think alternatively, embrace an entrepreneurial spirit, and thrive in a dynamic, bureaucracy-free environment, join us and be part of what’s next.

Role Summary

The VP, Tax-Strategy is responsible for helping to shape and advance the firm’s tax philosophy, tax-aware investment capabilities, and advisor-facing tax narrative.

This role sits at the intersection of Investments, Distribution, Product, Marketing, and Compliance. The VP, Tax-Strategy will help PICTON deliver better after-tax outcomes for Canadians while building advisor confidence in tax-efficient investing, a mandate that is growing in importance as clients demand more personalized, after-tax-focused portfolio solutions.

The role serves three core mandates:

  • Retail Distribution: Act as a trusted resource who supports advisors with practical, evidence-based tax strategies and compelling educational content.
  • Investment Portfolios: Partner closely with Investment teams to ensure discretionary portfolios and new product development incorporate tax efficiency and after-tax outcomes as core design principles.
  • Firm Tax Narrative: Contribute to developing and evolving PICTON’s tax messaging, helping advisors and investors clearly understand how tax-aware investing improves outcomes, while ensuring all communications are substantiated and compliant.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical grounding in tax and investments, the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, and the judgment to navigate a regulated environment.

Key Responsibilities

Tax-Aware Investment Leadership

  • Serve as a key subject matter expert on tax-aware investing and after-tax portfolio outcomes.
  • Develop frameworks and strategies to improve after-tax returns across investment portfolios and client segments.
  • Partner with Portfolio Management teams to incorporate tax efficiency into portfolio construction, asset location, capital gains management, and income strategies.
  • Advise on tax implications related to product design, investment strategies, and client outcomes.
  • Stay current on Canadian tax legislation, CRA guidance, and emerging trends, assessing implications for clients, portfolios, and the firm’s investment offerings.
  • Apply expertise across income tax strategies, wealth transfer planning, estate considerations, concentrated positions, and registered account optimization.

Advisor & Distribution Leadership

  • Act as a trusted resource for advisors across Canada, building credibility and presence over time.
  • Partner with Distribution teams in advisor meetings, conferences, roadshows, webinars, and key client events.
  • Develop practical tools, insights, and educational materials that help advisors communicate the value of tax-aware investing to their clients.
  • Support PICTON’s growth objectives by strengthening advisor confidence, deepening relationships, and contributing to asset growth and net flows.
  • Maintain a strong pulse on advisor needs, competitive dynamics, and evolving client expectations within Canadian wealth management.

Tax Narrative & Thought Leadership

  • Help develop and refine PICTON’s tax philosophy and advisor-facing tax narrative.
  • Create clear, compelling, and substantiated messaging around tax-aware investing, after-tax returns, tax-loss harvesting, and tax-efficient investment strategies.
  • Partner with Compliance, Legal, Marketing, and Product teams to ensure all tax-related communications are accurate, balanced, and effective.
  • Develop white papers, articles, videos, podcasts, presentations, and other thought leadership materials that help advisors and investors engage with tax-aware investing.
  • Represent PICTON at industry conferences, client events, and in media, with the opportunity to grow into a recognized industry voice.

Product Innovation

  • Partner with Product and Investment teams to develop and evolve tax-aware investment solutions, including:
  • Direct indexing and personalized portfolios
  • Tax-loss harvesting strategies
  • Tax-efficient income solutions
  • After-tax performance analytics
  • New tax-aware portfolio construction methodologies
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, research, and industry best practices related to tax optimization and personalization.

Experience & Qualifications

  • CPA, CA, TEP, or LLM tax designation preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian personal taxation, investment taxation, and tax-efficient portfolio construction.
  • Strong working knowledge across income tax strategies, wealth transfer planning, estate planning, trust structures, registered accounts, and concentrated position solutions.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio management, wealth management, and investment products, including alternatives.
  • Experience working with advisors, investment firms, portfolio managers, or high-net-worth clients.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for advisors and investors, including in live settings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience creating content or speaking publicly is an asset
  • Experience partnering with Compliance and Marketing teams to develop advisor- and investor-facing communications within a regulated environment.
  • An existing or developing profile through speaking, writing, or industry contributions is an asset.

Additional Considerations

  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively in support of advisor and client engagement.
  • Existing industry registration, or ability to obtain registration if required.
  • French bilingual capability is a meaningful asset given PICTON’s advisor and client presence in Québec.

What Success Looks Like

The strongest candidates for this role are not simply tax experts. They are trusted partners to Investment teams, credible voices in front of advisors, and strategic collaborators with Distribution who can help shape how the firm speaks about tax-aware investing.

Success will come from combining strong technical judgment with the ability to communicate clearly and influence across audiences. This person should be able to translate complex tax concepts into practical, compelling insights that help advisors and investors understand why tax-efficient investing matters and how it can improve long-term outcomes.
