Walvis Technologies, an Ottawa consulting and development firm, is hiring an AI developer to configure, build and integrate the AI solutions we deliver for government and enterprise clients: LLM applications, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agents on Azure AI Foundry.
The requirements
Four things are firm. Please apply only if all four are true.
- Hands-on experience configuring and building AI solutions on Azure AI Foundry, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). Work you did yourself, for an employer or a client, not only courses or tutorials.
- You live in Canada. The role is remote within Canada. Ottawa is preferred.
- You are eligible to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance.
- You apply for yourself, and you do the work yourself. No recruiters, no staffing agencies, no outsourcing firms. The role cannot be subcontracted.
About Walvis
Walvis Technologies is an Ottawa consulting and development firm, established in 2012. We design, build and support Microsoft cloud, AI and content systems for government and enterprise: citizen portals, records systems, custom applications and AI tools.
Everyone is in-house. The people who design a solution also build and support it, so nothing gets lost between the plan and the code.
What you'll do
- Configure and build AI solutions on Azure AI Foundry: choose and deploy models, write and version prompts and system instructions, and set up agents and the tools they call.
- Build retrieval-augmented generation (RAG): bring documents in, chunk and index them, set up vector and hybrid search (for example Azure AI Search), and return answers that cite their sources.
- Integrate AI into the applications and content systems we deliver, through APIs, with sign-in, permissions and error handling done properly.
- Measure answer quality: build test sets, run evaluations, and fix the retrieval or the prompt when an answer is wrong.
- Put safeguards in place: content filtering, grounding, and access control that respects who may see which document.
- Work directly with clients: run demos, ask the questions that matter and explain in plain language what AI can and cannot do.
What you bring
- Azure AI Foundry: model deployments (including Azure OpenAI models), agents, evaluations and content safety, and how the pieces connect.
- RAG done well: chunking, embeddings, vector and hybrid search with semantic ranking (Azure AI Search or similar), metadata filters and citations.
- Prompt and agent configuration: system prompts, structured output and tool calling, and the sense to use a simpler approach when an agent is not needed.
- Evaluation: groundedness and relevance checks, test sets, and comparing a change before it ships.
- Programming: Python or C# at a professional level, REST APIs and the Azure SDKs.
- Security: Entra ID, managed identities, secrets kept out of code, and document-level permissions carried through to search.
- Team habits: Git, pull requests, code review given and received well, and CI pipelines.
Assets
None of these are required. Each one helps.
- Microsoft Copilot Studio or Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility.
- Semantic Kernel, LangChain or a similar orchestration framework.
- Document processing at scale: Azure AI Document Intelligence, OCR and large document collections.
- The Microsoft stack we work in: Azure, Azure DevOps, SharePoint, Dynamics 365 or Power Platform.
- AI work on public-sector projects.
Good to know
- Full-time.
- Remote from anywhere in Canada. Ottawa is preferred.
- French is not required.
- Salary is discussed with shortlisted candidates.
