Full company description

Pender was founded in 2003 and is an independent, employee-owned investment firm located in Vancouver, British Columbia. Our goal is to protect and grow wealth for our investors over time. We have a talented investment team of expert analysts, security selectors and independent thinkers who actively manage our suite of niche investment funds, exploiting inefficient parts of the investing universe to achieve our goal. We believe that small and nimble funds, such as ours, can be opportunistic, accessing unique investment opportunities that are potentially rewarding for investors. We believe that funds with concentrated portfolios of value‐based investments have the potential to generate superior long‐term, risk‐adjusted returns. We believe that managers who have their own financial interests aligned with those of investors show greater conviction and act with heightened vigilance of both risks and opportunities. We believe that a diverse and inclusive team drives more rounded conversations, leading to better decision making for our funds.

Job description

Pender Ventures is seeking a highly capable and detail-oriented Analyst to join our investment team. This role is responsible for using AI tools and research methods to identify and reach out to promising B2B software companies, and for conducting initial calls with the founders to assess their potential as investments. The role also involves detailed analysis of these companies, including building financial models and preparing written assessments of each opportunity for the investment team.

About Pender Ventures

Pender Ventures invests in a concentrated selection of B2B and AI companies from across a variety of industries including healthtech, at their inflection point to scale. We thrive on working alongside entrepreneurs, technologists and management teams as partners executing on a plan, applying a scale-up framework and diversity influence to drive top-quartile returns and create tangible impact.

Pender Ventures is the private technology company investing arm of PenderFund Capital Management Ltd. (“PCM”) an independent, employee-owned investment firm managing over $7B in assets across private and public equities and fixed income.

About the Role

We are seeking an Analyst on a 24-month contract term, to join and grow with our team. In this role, you will support the investment team with identifying potential companies for investment, conducting initial screening calls, and rigorous financial analysis and modeling. You will be comfortable using AI in your day-to-day workflow, while maintaining the ability to critically review and analyze all outputs and make suggestions for improvement.

Responsibilities will include:

AI Tools

  • Use AI and traditional research tools to source, screen, and research prospective companies, and to support financial modeling and diligence work, applying judgment to check and refine every output before it feeds into an investment decision.
  • Help identify, test, and adopt new AI tools and workflows that make the team faster and more thorough at evaluating and managing investments.

Prospective Company Outreach

  • Identify and reach out to promising companies, monitor prospects, create alerts, and prepare first contact materials/research
  • Conduct initial screening calls with founders and management teams to assess fit and investment potential.
  • Research target industries, competitors, and market trends, including deep dives into healthtech and other relevant sectors, to develop insights and inform investment theses.

Financial Modeling and Assessment

  • Develop and maintain detailed financial models to support investment decisions, portfolio valuations, and scenario analysis.
  • Conduct thorough financial assessments of prospective investments, analyzing business models, revenue streams, and unit economics.
  • Contribute to all aspects of the due diligence process, including leading financial due diligence, assessing market dynamics and competition, and evaluating risks.
  • Prepare investment memos and presentations summarizing findings for the investment committee.
  • Support capital allocation decisions by providing data-driven insights into portfolio performance and resource requirements.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field. Advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., CFA, CPA, MBA) are a plus.
  • 2–3 years of experience in financial analysis, investment banking, private equity, management consulting, venture capital, or a similar field.
  • Proficiency in Excel (advanced financial modeling), financial databases (e.g., Bloomberg, CapIQ), and presentation tools (e.g., PowerPoint).
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, cash flow modeling, and valuation techniques.
  • Experience conducting research using a range of data sources and translating analysis to presentations / papers to communicate insights. Exceptional ability to translate complex financial data into clear insights and recommendations.
  • Analytical Mindset: Proactive and curious, with a passion for uncovering insights and solving complex problems and demonstrated interest in investing.
  • Excellent time and project management skills: detail-oriented, proactive, and self-motivated.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills

What’s in it for you?

  • The opportunity to work closely with innovative companies at critical growth stages.
  • A chance to hone your financial and operational expertise in venture capital.
  • Competitive compensation aligned with market standards.
  • Ongoing professional development and career growth opportunities, including the potential for the role to transition into a permanent position.
  • A collaborative and flexible work environment that values diversity and inclusion.

We are sharing that compensation for this role will include an estimated salary between $90,000 - $110,000 per year, along with a commission and bonus package. In determining final salary, Pender considers many factors including the candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience, job responsibilities, market conditions, position location and internal equity. Our aim is to ensure fair compensation practices that align with industry standards while acknowledging the unique value and expertise each individual brings to the role. The final base salary for the offer will be presented as part of a competitive compensation package.

Our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion:

Pender is committed to creating and maintaining a workplace that recognizes and values differences. It is a core principle at Pender that an equitable, diverse and inclusive workplace simply makes us better. A diverse team with a range of knowledge and experience makes better decisions, which means better results for our stakeholders. We do not discriminate on any basis and welcome applications from all qualified individuals. When selecting candidates for employment, promotion, training or any other benefits, it is on the basis of aptitude and ability. Should you require any accommodation or have questions, please let us know.

Final hiring decisions are made by qualified members of our hiring team, who review candidate information holistically and in accordance with our commitment to fairness, diversity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunity. As part of our recruitment process, Pender may use artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to assist with the screening and evaluation of applications.
