Job description

Who we need

Reporting to the Purchasing Manager, our client is hiring a Buyer to manage sourcing and purchasing activities across a diverse portfolio of custom manufacturing projects. As our new Buyer, you will take ownership of sourcing raw materials and fabricated components, obtaining competitive quotes, negotiating with suppliers, and ensuring materials are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality standards. You will manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing new sourcing requirements with purchasing and production planning activities, including purchase order management, supplier coordination, and delivery schedules. Working closely with Project Management, Cost Estimation, Account Management, and Production, you will anticipate challenges, resolve supply issues, and help keep projects moving from development through manufacturing.

This is a full-time, hybrid role based in Scarborough, Ontario, requiring a minimum of three days per week onsite, with an expectation of four to five days during the initial onboarding period.

What’s in it for you

Ownership and impact. You will take ownership of a diverse portfolio of custom manufacturing projects, playing a critical role in ensuring materials and fabricated components are sourced competitively and delivered on time. With a strong focus on new sourcing rather than repetitive purchasing, you will have the autonomy to make decisions, solve supplier challenges, negotiate pricing, and directly influence project timelines, costs, and quality.

Variety and collaboration. You will work across multiple projects at different stages of development, sourcing everything from raw materials to custom-fabricated components. You will collaborate closely with Project Management, Cost Estimation, Account Management, and Production, gaining exposure to the full manufacturing process and building strong relationships with suppliers and internal teams. Every project will bring different requirements and opportunities to apply your problem-solving skills.

Career growth. You will have the opportunity to deepen your expertise in strategic sourcing, supplier management, and production planning while expanding your understanding of custom manufacturing. As you grow, there is potential to progress into a Senior Buyer role and explore broader leadership opportunities across Purchasing, Supply Chain, or Cost Estimation, with possible exposure to international projects.

How you will make an impact:

  • Own sourcing and purchasing. You will manage sourcing activities across a portfolio of custom manufacturing projects, identifying suppliers, obtaining and evaluating competitive quotes, negotiating pricing, and awarding business. You will source raw materials and fabricated components, balancing cost, quality, and delivery requirements to support successful project execution.
  • Build and strengthen supplier relationships. You will develop and maintain strong partnerships with existing and new suppliers, negotiating competitive pricing, securing capacity, and ensuring quality and delivery expectations are met. You will identify opportunities to expand the supplier network, improve sourcing options, and strengthen supply reliability.
  • Coordinate purchasing and production planning. You will issue and manage purchase orders, maintain accurate purchasing and inventory information in the ERP system, and work closely with Production to align material availability with manufacturing schedules. You will monitor supplier commitments, anticipate potential delays, and expedite materials or adjust delivery plans to keep projects on track.
  • Solve problems and manage competing priorities. You will oversee purchasing requirements across multiple active projects, identifying risks related to pricing, supplier capacity, material availability, and delivery timelines. You will proactively investigate challenges, recommend practical solutions, and take ownership of resolving issues while protecting project budgets and deadlines.
  • Collaborate across teams. You will partner closely with Project Management, Cost Estimation, Account Management, and Production to understand project requirements, communicate sourcing updates, and coordinate purchasing decisions. You will provide clear, timely information, address questions, and help ensure projects move smoothly from development through manufacturing.
  • Drive continuous improvement. You will identify opportunities to improve purchasing processes, supplier performance, and planning accuracy. You will contribute to supplier evaluations, maintain reliable purchasing data, and recommend changes that strengthen efficiency, cost control, and on-time delivery.

What you bring:

  • The purchasing experience. You have experience sourcing raw materials, fabricated components, or custom-manufactured products in a project-based manufacturing environment. You understand the complexities of managing multiple purchasing requirements, evaluating supplier quotes, negotiating pricing, and ensuring materials meet quality, cost, and delivery expectations. Ideally, you bring knowledge of metal fabrication, although experience in fixturing, woodworking, or related manufacturing environments is also valuable.
  • The planning and technical skills. You have experience coordinating purchasing activities with production schedules, monitoring material availability, and managing purchase orders and delivery timelines. You are proficient in Excel and comfortable working with ERP or MRP systems to maintain accurate purchasing information, track orders, and support planning decisions.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities. You are organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple projects with changing requirements and tight deadlines. You can anticipate potential supply challenges, assess options, and take initiative to resolve issues before they affect production. You balance cost, quality, and timelines while maintaining accuracy and accountability for your work.
  • The communication and collaboration skills. You build positive working relationships with suppliers and internal teams, communicating clearly and proactively to keep everyone informed. You can navigate challenging conversations, negotiate effectively, and work across Project Management, Cost Estimation, and Production to align priorities and find practical solutions.
  • The initiative and drive. You take ownership of your work, follow through on commitments, and bring forward solutions rather than simply identifying problems. You are curious, adaptable, and motivated to expand your knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and sourcing strategies. You welcome feedback, learn from challenges, and look for opportunities to improve how work gets done.

Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $80,000 annually. Compensation will be determined based on your experience, skills, qualifications, and the needs of the organization. We are committed to fair and equitable compensation and aim to provide a competitive salary that reflects the value and expertise you bring to the team.

TalentMinded welcomes and appreciates candidates with a range of backgrounds and experiences. If you have 70% of the qualifications we are looking for and want to play an integral role in delivering innovative products, apply to express your interest.

What you can expect from the interview process:

  • An interview with the Purchasing Manager to discuss your sourcing and purchasing experience, knowledge of manufacturing processes, approach to supplier management, and ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • A final interview with the Director to explore your approach to problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, communication, and taking ownership of purchasing decisions and project outcomes.
