Job description

Mott MacDonald is seeking an experienced Energy Client Director to lead and grow strategic relationships with priority oil and gas, midstream, pipeline, and facilities clients across Alberta and Western Canada. The role will be primarily focused on Western Canada, with the opportunity to support key client relationships and projects elsewhere in Canada where aligned with national account priorities.

The primary mandate is to develop clients and projects for our established pipelines and facilities team. This includes building long-term partnerships with major midstream operators, pipeline owners, shippers, producers, and industrial clients, and aligning Mott MacDonald's engineering and advisory capabilities with their capital programs and operational priorities.

The role will also identify opportunities to expand relationships into adjacent services, including power and electrification, carbon capture, major infrastructure, renewables, nuclear, and grid-related solutions. These areas represent a cross-sell opportunity that supports the core oil and gas mandate, rather than the primary focus of the position.

As a trusted advisor you will identify growth opportunities, shape client-focused solutions, and help Mott MacDonald respond to the rapidly changing Canadian energy market.

The ideal candidate is a commercially minded relationship leader with deep knowledge of Western Canada's oil and gas and midstream markets, strong executive presence, and a proven track record of growing strategic accounts. They are collaborative, client-focused, and passionate about building lasting partnerships that deliver value for clients and sustainable growth for the business.

Success will be measured not only by account growth, but also by the strength of the relationships built, the value created for clients, and the long-term strategic partnerships established.

Responsibilities:

Planning

    • Develop and execute strategic account plans focused on client retention, growth, expansion, and long-term partnership development.
    • Establish and manage client investment budgets, pursuit strategies, and strategic account development plans.
    • Maintain account plans, relationship maps, market intelligence, sales forecasts, and opportunity pipelines through CRM systems.

Relationships

    • Build and maintain trusted relationships with client executive leaders, operational stakeholders, project sponsors, procurement teams, regulators, government agencies, and Indigenous-owned development organizations.
    • Lead executive engagement planning, account reviews, governance meetings, and relationship development activities.
    • Identify opportunities to expand services within existing accounts by understanding client capital programs, operational priorities, market challenges, and future investment plans.
    • Identify cross-sell opportunities in adjacent areas such as power and electrification, carbon capture, major infrastructure, renewables, hydrogen, nuclear, and grid-related services.
    • Represent Mott MacDonald at client meetings, industry conferences, regulatory forums, Indigenous engagement sessions, and professional associations.

Pipeline and Data Hygiene

    • Lead client development for pipeline, midstream, and natural gas facilities opportunities, supported by Mott MacDonald's technical and project delivery teams.
    • Monitor account performance, project outcomes, client satisfaction, and relationship health metrics.

Collaboration

    • Act as the client's advocate within Mott MacDonald, ensuring alignment between client objectives and service delivery.
    • Work with technical leaders and market specialists to align Mott MacDonald's capabilities with client challenges and strategic priorities.
    • Facilitate collaboration across business units to deliver integrated and multidisciplinary solutions.

Project Performance

    • Collaborate closely with project delivery teams to support successful project execution and a consistently positive client experience.
    • Proactively resolve client concerns and serve as an escalation point for strategic accounts.

Other

    • Mentor project managers and client-facing professionals on key account management, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building best practices.

Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business or related discipline.
    • 15+ years of experience in client management, strategic account leadership, business development, or growth-focused leadership roles within Western Canada's energy, infrastructure, engineering consulting, or professional services markets.
    • Demonstrated success managing and expanding strategic relationships with oil and gas, midstream, pipeline, and associated facilities clients in Western Canada.
    • Experience identifying cross-sell opportunities across adjacent energy and infrastructure services, including power and electrification, carbon capture, renewables, hydrogen, nuclear, and grid-related solutions, is an asset.
    • Proven ability to serve as a trusted advisor to executive and senior-level client stakeholders.
    • Strong experience leading key account programs and developing long-term account growth strategies.
    • Deep understanding of Western Canada's oil and gas and midstream market, including client capital programs, regulatory considerations, commercial drivers, and the engineering needs of pipeline and facilities operators.
    • Established relationships with priority organizations such as TC Energy, Enbridge, Pembina, IPL, FortisBC, Suncor, Cenovus, CNRL, ATCO, Gibson Energy, Keyera, and Indigenous-owned development organizations are strongly preferred.
    • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering, project delivery, and advisory teams to deliver client-focused solutions.
    • Strong understanding of professional services delivery models, client governance structures, and account management methodologies.
    • Demonstrated ability to influence executive decision-makers and build consensus among diverse stakeholder groups.
    • Experience managing strategic account plans, client pipelines, relationship maps, CRM systems, and revenue forecasts.
    • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to identify growth opportunities while maintaining a client-first mindset.
    • Exceptional communication, presentation, facilitation, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
    • Ability to operate independently while coordinating multiple internal and external stakeholders.
    • Established network and reputation across Alberta and Western Canadian oil and gas and midstream markets.
