Reporting to the COO, this individual will partner closely with Merchandising, Procurement, Store Operations, Logistics, and other department leaders to support profitable growth, operational discipline, and sound business decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and actively participate in month-end and year-end financial close processes, ensuring timely, accurate, and high-quality financial information
  • Prepare and review financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
  • Oversee journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting financial schedules
  • Analyze financial results, trends, and variances and clearly communicate key findings and recommendations to management
  • Maintain a disciplined close calendar and continuously improve process efficiency, documentation, and reporting quality
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules as required to support an accurate and timely close
  • Perform and oversee balance sheet reconciliations and investigate unusual transactions or variances
  • Actively participate in monthly, quarterly, and year-end accounting activities, ensuring completeness and accuracy of financial records

Accounting Operations & Internal Controls

  • Oversee and participate in general ledger activities, accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory accounting, tax filings, banking activities, credit card processing, gift card accounting, and cash management.
  • Support the accounting team in resolving day-to-day operational accounting issues and month-end requirements
  • Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, financial procedures, and internal controls designed to safeguard company assets
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting principles, regulatory requirements, and internal policies
  • Coordinate with external auditors and prepare the documentation required for the successful completion of audits
  • Identify and implement improvements to accounting workflows, automation, documentation, and ERP utilization
  • Ensure accurate reconciliation and control of POS, e-commerce, payment platforms, and related financial systems.

Inventory, Cost & Profitability Management

  • Oversee and participate in inventory accounting, including valuation, reserves, adjustments, inventory variances, and reconciliations between financial and operational systems
  • Monitor and analyze cost of goods sold, gross margins, expenses, inventory levels, and key cost drivers
  • Implement and maintain cost-accounting methodologies appropriate for a retail environment
  • Identify cost-reduction opportunities and recommend actions to improve operating efficiency and profitability
  • Partner with Merchandising, Procurement, Store Operations, and Logistics to improve cost accuracy, inventory management, pricing, and margin strategies
  • Maintain financial oversight of lease accounting, occupancy costs, and real estate-related financial obligations.

Financial Planning, Analysis & Business Support

  • Partner with Operations and Supply Chain teams to assess financial impacts of inventory flow, logistics, procurement, and other supply chain initiatives.
  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes with the Senior Director, Finance, Risk & Technology, and department leaders
  • Prepare budget and forecast variance analysis and provide actionable recommendations to improve performance
  • Track key performance indicators, including sales, margins, expenses, inventory turnover, cash flow, and profitability by channel or category
  • Perform financial modelling, scenario analysis, and business-case analysis for new initiatives, investments, and expansion projects
  • Provide reliable and actionable financial insights to support strategic and operational decision-making

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Finance team while actively participating in critical accounting activities and supporting operational execution during peak periods and month-end close cycles. The Controller serves as both a people leader and a hands-on accounting professional who ensures the quality and accuracy of the department's work.
  • Ensure effective allocation of responsibilities, training, succession planning, and operational continuity across the Finance function.
  • Act as a finance business partner to cross-functional teams, including Payroll, Operations, Supply Chain, and Real Estate.
