Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Economist based in Canada.

As an Economist, you will contribute to research that supports Canada's digital transformation and strengthens its workforce competitiveness. You will dedicate approximately half of your time to major labour market information initiatives, conducting in-depth economic and workforce analysis. Your work will help identify emerging skills needs, assess technological developments, and anticipate changes across Canada's digital economy. You will also contribute to economic forecasting, policy research, and workforce development initiatives. Working with quantitative and qualitative researchers, government partners, and industry stakeholders, you will turn complex data into practical insights. This is an opportunity to influence evidence-based decisions and contribute to research with a meaningful national impact.

Accountabilities

You will support the delivery of economic research and labour market intelligence projects, combining rigorous data analysis, forecasting, and stakeholder collaboration to produce actionable insights.

    • Execute research methodologies for labour market outlook reports, including longitudinal and cross-sectoral analysis.

    • Contribute to quarterly economic briefs highlighting labour market trends and developments across Canada's digital economy.

    • Support the development and maintenance of labour market information dashboards, analytical tools, and resources for businesses and policymakers.

    • Collaborate with provincial and territorial partners to align labour market data and support evidence-based workforce planning.

    • Contribute to the development and ongoing maintenance of a national labour market information hub.

    • Participate in advisory councils, co-design sessions, stakeholder consultations, and external events to validate research findings.

    • Work with quantitative and qualitative researchers and policy analysts on integrated research initiatives.

    • Translate project objectives into research questions, analytical plans, data requirements, and project deliverables, identifying methodological risks and dependencies.

    • Manage assigned research workstreams, track progress against timelines, and communicate findings, limitations, and potential delivery risks.

    • Conduct literature reviews and jurisdictional scans examining Canadian and international trends in the digital economy, skills development, and workforce policies.

    • Support the design and delivery of key informant interviews and longitudinal employer surveys, analyzing hiring intentions, skills gaps, and technology adoption.

    • Produce research papers, sector briefs, and data-driven insights into Canada's evolving ICT labour market.

    • Analyze the impact of automation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, clean technology, digital infrastructure, and other emerging technologies on skills demand across industries.

    • Examine employment, wages, productivity, and job quality to provide a comprehensive understanding of labour market conditions.

    • Contribute to economic forecasting and modelling, including input-output models, and integrate new data sources and methodologies.

    • Support economic impact assessments of programs using appropriate quantitative methods.

    • Collect, integrate, clean, harmonize, and manage complex datasets from Statistics Canada, RTRA, Vicinity Jobs, and provincial sources.

    • Apply predictive analytics and rigorous standards to longitudinal and cross-sectional research while ensuring accessibility, reproducibility, and transparency.

    • Maintain consistent definitions and classification mappings for digital economy industries, occupations, and skills across datasets and publications.

    • Comply with data access, confidentiality, and disclosure requirements, documenting their implications for analysis and reporting.

    • Collaborate with government relations, policy, and communications teams to communicate findings through accessible formats.

    • Engage with government departments, academic institutions, research networks, and industry associations.

    • Contribute to grant proposals, stakeholder reports, and evidence-based recommendations aligned with strategic priorities.

    • Requirements

The ideal candidate combines strong economic research expertise with practical experience in labour market analysis, forecasting, and data-driven research. You should be comfortable managing complex projects, interpreting economic evidence, and communicating findings to diverse audiences.

      • Master's degree in Economics, Public Policy, Data Science, or a related discipline.

      • At least 2–3 years of experience in economic research, forecasting, and labour market analysis, preferably within the Canadian context.

      • Demonstrated experience contributing to longitudinal research projects and developing dashboards, labour market outlook reports, or applied workforce tools.

      • Knowledge of labour market data, workforce policy, and relevant research frameworks.

      • Experience with economic modelling, including macroeconomic, sectoral, and input-output models.

      • Proficiency in data analytics and visualization tools such as Python, R, SAS, Tableau, or Power BI.

      • Familiarity with economic forecasting techniques and modelling methodologies.

      • Strong analytical and quantitative research capabilities, including data cleaning, integration, and interpretation.

      • Excellent writing, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex economic findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

      • Experience working with equity-deserving groups or inclusive labour market policies is an asset.

      • Familiarity with labour market information frameworks and intergovernmental data integration initiatives is an advantage.

      • Experience with occupational and industry classifications, skills taxonomies, or classification-system concordances is an asset.

      • Bilingualism in English and French is a strong advantage.

      • Ability to think strategically, identify patterns and trends, challenge assumptions, and develop creative solutions to complex problems.

      • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary and geographically distributed teams.

      • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, supported by careful analysis and consideration of diverse perspectives.

      • High standards of integrity, discretion, and ethical conduct when handling confidential information and sensitive data.

      • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including an understanding of the challenges faced by diverse communities.

      • Strong organizational skills, accountability, resilience, and flexibility when managing changing priorities and project deadlines.

      • A proactive, results-oriented approach and commitment to continuous learning and staying informed about developments in the digital economy.

      • Benefits

        • Annual salary range of CAD $70,000–$80,000.

        • Fully remote position, open to candidates anywhere in Canada.

        • Full-time, fixed-term employment.

        • Opportunity to contribute to high-impact research and programs supporting Canada's digital economy.

        • Work on initiatives that inform economic growth, workforce development, and public policy.

        • Collaborative, agile, and innovative working environment.
