About Us

The Labour Standards Division is responsible for the Labour Standards Code and related regulations, which establish the basic rights and responsibilities of provincially regulated employers and workers in Nova Scotia. The legislation provides a dispute resolution mechanism and enforcement tools for addressing complaints under the Code and establishes licensing and registration requirements in relation to the recruitment and hiring of foreign workers.

We help people understand and comply with our legislation and provide a fair, accessible and responsive dispute resolution system.

We know our work can be challenging and often deals with people in difficult situations − we strive to create a welcoming, respectful, safe, supportive, and inclusive workplace culture.

About Our Opportunity

As the Manager, Information and Dispute Resolution, you will play an important leadership role in supporting the effective delivery of inquiry and dispute resolution services within the Labour Standards Division.

In this role, you will lead a team responsible for providing information, resolving disputes, and supporting the administration and enforcement of the Labour Standards Code and regulations. You will oversee day-to-day operations, manage workflow and resources, monitor service quality, and identify opportunities to continuously improve how services are delivered to Nova Scotians.

You will also manage complex complaint files, applying your knowledge of labour standards legislation, regulations, and legal principles to evaluate evidence and make well-reasoned decisions. Your ability to balance operational demands, sound decision-making, and people leadership will help support fair, timely, and consistent services for employers and workers.

This is an opportunity for an experienced leader who enjoys solving complex problems, developing people, and contributing to quality public service.

Primary Accountabilities

As the Manager, you will provide leadership and operational oversight to ensure information and dispute resolution services are delivered effectively, consistently, and in a timely manner.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Manage complaint intake, assignment and workflow in the division, monitor key performance indicators and recommend and implement changes to support continuous process improvement.
  • Manage a team of officers and provide effective guidance to support their settlement, investigation and adjudication work.
  • Review and provide feedback on officers’ written adjudication work ensuring their investigation work is complete, they have correctly applied the legislation and their decision is sound.
  • Manage a small caseload of complex files, conduct thorough investigations in an impartial, fair and timely manner, make findings of fact and legal findings, and issue written reasoned decisions.
  • Promote a safe, supportive, inclusive, and welcoming workplace that values diversity, fosters employee recognition and encourages employee development and engagement.

Through your leadership and sound judgement, you will help promote consistent administration of labour standards legislation, fair dispute resolution, quality decision-making, and effective service to Nova Scotia employers and workers.

Qualifications and Experience

You have a degree in a related field such as law plus several years of relevant experience.

You demonstrate relevant experience in interpreting, applying, and analyzing legislation, regulations, or policies. You have well developed investigation related skills with experience in areas such as research, issue recognition, and fact finding. You have an aptitude for dealing with complex issues, strong analytical skills, tact and diplomacy, and capacity for decisive action.

You are a motivational leader who embraces the values of kindness, integrity, accountability, personal learning and growth, respect, innovation, and collaboration. You apply the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion to all areas of your work and support your team and colleagues to do the same.

You have well-developed planning and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and adapt in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and deadlines. You are a problem solver and innovator who generates, promotes, and implements new ideas, and resolves concerns. You have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and use these skills to foster effective relationships with others, including collaborative relationships to achieve common goals.

You have experience dealing with frustrated and upset individuals and can deescalate situations by seeking to understand others’ perspectives, remaining calm and respectful, and communicating effectively.
