Job description

We are hiring for this position out of our Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary offices. Successful candidates who apply outside of these areas will be expected to relocate and reside in a location that is within a commutable distance.

About the role:

As an experienced platform engineer, you build and run the infrastructure that other engineers depend on, and you measure your success by how fast and safely they can ship. Here, your customers are our data teams, and the platform you build powers products used by merchants and service providers across Canada. You have designed a platform from the ground up, lived with the consequences, and can explain what you would do differently. You know the difference between a proof of concept and a production-grade system, and you treat security, reliability, and cost as design inputs rather than afterthoughts. You are hands-on, you own what you build, and you work comfortably with engineering, security, and business partners to get the right solution into production.

About the day-to-day:

  • Build and evolve the data platform
    • Design and maintain platform infrastructure as code, with reusable modules and consistent environments
    • Build CI/CD golden paths that let data engineers ship safely and independently
    • Automate provisioning, access management, and platform changes to eliminate manual toil
  • Run it reliably
    • Own platform availability, high availability, disaster recovery, and capacity planning
    • Define and maintain SLOs, monitoring, and alerting across storage, compute, and orchestration
    • Participate in the on-call rotation and lead blameless postmortems
  • Secure it by design
    • Implement access control, secrets management, encryption, and data masking in partnership with Security
    • Keep the platform audit-ready through automated, policy-driven controls
  • Make data teams faster
    • Treat data engineers as your customers by reducing friction and improving developer experience
    • Contribute to solution design and peer code reviews with a platform and reliability lens
    • Evaluate new technologies and take the successful ones from proof of concept to production

About the qualifications:

  • 6+ years in Platform, DevOps, or SRE roles, including at least one greenfield platform build you can speak to end-to-end (architecture decisions, trade-offs, and what you would do differently)
  • Deep, hands-on expertise with Terraform at scale, including module design, state management, and drift control across many environments (Terragrunt or equivalent patterns)
  • Production experience with Docker and Kubernetes, including upgrades, networking, RBAC, and incident response
  • Proven experience designing CI/CD pipelines as a shared platform for engineering teams (GitLab CI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions or equivalent)
  • Strong experience with cloud-native services on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including object storage, serverless compute, managed databases, and IAM
  • Experience building observability with meaningful SLOs, actionable alerting, and dashboards (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana or equivalent)
  • Experience securing platforms that handle sensitive data and PII, including access control, secrets management, encryption, and working in partnership with security teams
  • Strong scripting and automation skills in Python or Go
  • Experience operating data platforms or tooling (Snowflake, Airflow, dbt, Kafka) an asset
  • Experience with data governance, cataloging, or masking policies (Snowflake Horizon, Purview, Unity Catalog) an asset
  • Experience with policy-as-code (OPA, Sentinel) an asset
  • Experience managing cost on consumption-based cloud platforms an asset
  • Experience in a financial institution or regulated environment (PCI DSS, OSFI) an asset
  • AWS and Azure certifications are assets
  • You have written a postmortem that changed how your team operates
  • You explain technical trade-offs clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders, in writing and verbally
