Okwese Home Care is a caring private family household in Herring Cove, Halifax, seeking a qualified Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) or equivalent personal care provider to support our parents at home.
This full-time, permanent position involves supporting one parent with dementia and another with significantly limited mobility. Duties include companionship, accompanied walks, mobility assistance, meal preparation, medication assistance within the authorized care plan, and light housekeeping related to their care.
We seek a patient, dependable caregiver with relevant care experience and effective communication skills in Yoruba, Igbo and English. Our mother relies on Yoruba due to dementia, and our father is more comfortable communicating in Igbo.
The schedule is Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., totalling 30 hours per week. Pay is $21.30 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, with a start date as soon as possible.
A typical workday runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. The caregiver begins by checking in with both parents, reviewing care notes and discussing any updates with the family.
Throughout the day, the caregiver provides companionship, supports daily routines and assists our father with safe mobility. They support our mother with calm reassurance, familiar activities and an accompanied walk when appropriate. Communication takes place in Yoruba with our mother and Igbo with our father, with English used for care records and communication with family and healthcare professionals.
The caregiver prepares lunch and snacks, encourages hydration and assists both parents with scheduled medications according to written instructions, their training and the authorized care plan. Light housekeeping and laundry related to our parents’ care are completed as time allows.
Before leaving, the caregiver records the day’s activities, medication assistance and any concerns, and provides a handover to the family. Activities are adjusted to our parents’ comfort, abilities and needs that day.
We value kindness, patience, reliability, honesty and respect for our parents’ dignity, privacy and independence. We seek someone who communicates calmly, respects cultural preferences, notices changes in wellbeing and works collaboratively with our family.
Required qualifications and experience:
Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) certification or an equivalent personal care provider credential, with training in caring for older adults, people with disabilities or people recovering from illness.
Relevant experience supporting people with dementia and significantly limited mobility.
Experience assisting with prescribed medications according to written care plans, professional instructions and the caregiver’s authorized responsibilities.
Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
Effective spoken Yoruba and Igbo, and English skills sufficient to understand care instructions, maintain records and communicate with family and healthcare professionals.
A valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
The successful candidate must provide two professional references from supervisors or managers and complete satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks before starting. Qualifications and current CCA Registry status will be verified where applicable to the credential and role.
We offer a full-time, permanent position with a consistent Monday-to-Friday schedule, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., totalling 30 hours per week. Compensation is $21.30 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, with two weeks of annual vacation time.
As a caring family, we aim to provide a welcoming, respectful workplace where the caregiver feels valued. We offer an orientation to our parents’ needs and routines, clear care instructions, regular communication with the family and opportunities to share observations and suggestions.
The role provides an opportunity to build meaningful, ongoing relationships with our parents and make a positive difference in their daily lives. We are also open to discussing reasonable accommodations that support the employee while maintaining safe, consistent care.
