Job Title: Municipal Project ManagerJob Description

This role oversees a diverse portfolio of municipal infrastructure and facility projects, typically managing 1015 smaller projects concurrently through all stages of delivery. The Project Manager coordinates schedules, budgets, stakeholders, and contractors while ensuring projects remain aligned with municipal processes and priorities. This position offers significant ownership, visibility, and exposure to a wide range of municipal work, making it ideal for a junior-to-intermediate Project Manager seeking to strengthen municipal and owner-side experience.

Responsibilities
  • Manage approximately 1015 municipal projects at various stages of delivery, from initiation through completion.
  • Coordinate project schedules, budgets, contractors, stakeholders, and project requirements to ensure timely and successful delivery.
  • Monitor project costs and ensure all work remains aligned with approved budgets and financial controls.
  • Develop, maintain, and track detailed project schedules, including key milestones and critical path activities.
  • Collaborate with internal municipal departments to clarify responsibilities, define project requirements, secure necessary approvals, and align project priorities.
  • Manage communication and information flow between internal stakeholders, contractors, consultants, and other project participants.
  • Support contractor and contract management activities, including coordination of scope, change management, and performance monitoring throughout project delivery.
  • Conduct or coordinate site inspections in Fort McMurray and surrounding communities as required to monitor progress, quality, and compliance.
  • Identify project issues, competing priorities, schedule impacts, and other risks, and escalate or address them proactively.
  • Maintain strong organization across a changing portfolio of smaller projects with different schedules, stakeholders, and requirements.
  • Work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision while demonstrating initiative and ownership of assigned projects.
  • Receive and act on day-to-day direction from municipal representatives while maintaining professional communication and alignment with project objectives.
  • Ensure municipal processes, policies, and stakeholder expectations are understood and incorporated into project planning and execution.
  • Coordinate work related to municipal infrastructure and facility projects such as sidewalks, streets, community centres, building repairs, painting, parapet and flashing work, and mechanical unit-related activities.
Essential Skills
  • Proven project management experience in a construction or municipal environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage approximately 1015 concurrent projects, each valued up to approximately $500K.
  • Experience delivering municipal infrastructure and facility projects.
  • Municipal project management experience with knowledge of municipal processes, stakeholders, and governance.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including coordination with internal departments and external contractors and consultants.
  • Strong scheduling skills, including development and maintenance of project timelines and milestones.
  • Proficiency in cost management and budgeting, including monitoring project costs against approved budgets.
  • Experience with contract management and contractor coordination throughout project delivery.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively across a large and changing pipeline of smaller projects.
  • Proactive and self-directed approach, with strong leadership and a sense of ownership.
  • Comfort working with day-to-day direction from municipal representatives.
  • Ability to travel to Fort McMurray and surrounding communities for site inspections as required.
  • Comfortable stepping into an environment with a large and evolving portfolio of small projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Direct experience delivering smaller municipal projects such as sidewalks, streets, community centres, building repairs, painting, parapet and flashing work, and mechanical unit-related projects.
  • Experience working directly with public-sector clients or within a municipal organization.
  • Existing knowledge of how municipal departments interact and how to identify the appropriate policy or decision owner.
  • Based in Fort McMurray, or able to be based there, is preferred.
  • Edmonton-based candidates are also suitable, provided they can travel to Fort McMurray and surrounding locations as required.
  • Interest in building stronger municipal and owner-side project management experience.
  • Ability to thrive in a role with broad responsibility and significant autonomy over a portfolio of projects.
Work Environment

The Project Manager will be seconded into a municipal environment, where municipal staff provide day-to-day work direction, onboarding, introductions, and project chartering. The role focuses on managing approximately 1015 smaller municipal facility and infrastructure projects, offering broad exposure to stakeholder management, contracting, cost control, scheduling, site coordination, and municipal processes. The position is intended for candidates based in Fort McMurray, though Edmonton-based professionals can be considered if they can travel regularly to Fort McMurray and surrounding communities, typically about once per week, for site inspections. A rotational work model, such as five days on site followed by five days off site in locations such as Edmonton or Calgary, is a potential option. The engagement is initially structured as a contract of approximately six months, with the possibility of extension if the individual proves to be a valuable resource. The work environment emphasizes collaboration with municipal departments, adaptability to a large and changing pipeline of small projects, and professional autonomy in managing a varied project portfolio.
