Job description

About the Role

Paladin Security is hiring a dedicated Security Officer to join our team at the Health Sciences Centre, assigned specifically to the Psychiatric Assessment Unit (PAU). In this role, you serve as a reassuring, safety-focused presence within a specialized healthcare environment. You will work side-by-side with clinical staff to maintain a secure setting where patients can receive care and healthcare professionals can work safely.

If you excel at remaining calm in high-pressure situations, value teamwork, and want a meaningful security career supporting healthcare safety, this position offers stable full-time hours, predictable scheduling, and purpose-driven work.

What Success Looks Like

Your primary goal is to prevent safety incidents through active observation, clear communication, and calm de-escalation. Healthcare staff manage patient treatment, while you focus on maintaining a safe physical environment and responding to safety risks.

Key daily responsibilities include:

  • Clinical Collaboration: Check in with clinical staff at the start of every shift to review safety priorities, assign duties, and establish communication protocols before entering designated care areas.

  • Observation and Access Control: Monitor entry points and assigned security cameras, maintain a visible presence, and stay vigilant to recognize emerging safety concerns before they escalate.

  • De-Escalation and Response: Use clear verbal communication and de-escalation techniques to defuse tense situations. Respond promptly to requests for support from healthcare staff.

  • Care Assistance: Support clinical staff in managing aggressive or unsafe behaviors, applying authorized physical intervention techniques when necessary and in strict accordance with training, site orders, and health authority policies.

  • Reporting and Handover: Document incidents, maintenance issues, and safety concerns accurately. Conduct detailed handovers with incoming officers to ensure continuity of safety across shifts.

Compensation and Shift Details

  • Pay Rate: $20.50 per hour

  • Hours: Full-time, averaging 84 hours biweekly

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (0730–1930 for days, 1930–0730 for nights)

  • Schedule Structure: 4-week continental rotation combining day and night shifts, providing predictable scheduling and extended days off (including alternating 3-day weekends).

What You Bring

Must-Have Qualifications:

  • Strong communication and active listening skills with a professional, compassionate demeanor.

  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and decisive during stressful or confrontational situations.

  • Physical capability to stand, walk, and participate in physical interventions when safety requires it.

  • Availability to work a 12-hour shift schedule that includes both day and night rotations.

  • Ability to meet all security licensing, background check, and site-specific health/safety requirements.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in security, crisis intervention, healthcare support, or customer service.

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

  • Formal training in non-violent crisis intervention or verbal de-escalation.
