Job description

Senior Accountant

Calgary, Alberta | Full-Time | Onsite

You’ve been part of building the accounting foundation. Now you’re ready for more ownership, more exposure to the business, and a role that will help you keep moving toward your CPA.

Tangent Design Engineering is looking for a Senior Accountant to join our growing team in Calgary. This role is well suited to someone who has built a strong accounting foundation, is actively progressing toward their CPA designation, and is ready to take on broader ownership in a project-based business.

You’ll support core accounting activities including month-end close, reconciliations, financial reporting, project accounting, budgeting, forecasting, accounts payable and receivable, and financial analysis. You’ll also work closely with leaders and project teams across Tangent to improve financial visibility, strengthen processes, and help the business make better decisions.

We’re looking for someone who is technically strong, curious about the business behind the numbers, and ready to keep growing.

What You’ll Do

  • Support and increasingly own month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, invoicing, accruals, reconciliations, consolidations and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare financial reports and support variance analysis for leadership.
  • Complete balance sheet, bank, credit card, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, collections, and cash flow processes.
  • Coordinate and complete budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Support project accounting, including project costing, labour allocation, work in progress, invoicing, margins, inventory counts and project financial performance.
  • Work with project managers and operational leaders to improve the accuracy and usefulness of project financial information.
  • Prepare monthly financial and operational executive updates to senior management.
  • Support payroll-related accounting, benefits reconciliations, and other employee-related financial transactions.
  • Prepare year-end working papers and support external accounting, audit, and tax requirements.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and appropriate financial controls.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline, automate, and improve accounting and finance processes.
  • Take on increasing responsibility as your experience and CPA studies progress.

What We’re Looking For

We do not expect you to have completed your CPA designation. This role is intended for someone who is actively working toward their CPA and looking to build stronger technical, business, and project accounting experience. Ideally, your resume will show:

  • Approximately 3 to 6 years of progressive accounting experience.
  • A degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • Current enrolment in, or active progression toward, the CPA designation.
  • Hands-on experience with month-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, and general ledger accounting.
  • Experience preparing or supporting financial reporting and variance analysis.
  • Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, invoicing, and cash flow processes.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience working with accounting or ERP systems. Experience with Quickbooks and Ruddr is an asset.
  • Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or management reporting.
  • Experience in a project-based environment such as engineering, consulting, construction, technology, manufacturing, or professional services is an asset.
  • Exposure to project accounting, job costing, work in progress, utilization, or project profitability is particularly valuable.

What We’ll Explore in the Interview

A resume tells us what you’ve been exposed to. The interview will help us understand how you work. We’ll be interested in learning more about:

  • The accounting processes you have personally owned and how independently you have managed them.
  • How you approach month-end close and ensure the numbers are accurate.
  • How you identify and investigate financial information that does not look right.
  • Your experience with project accounting, project costing, margins, work in progress, or project profitability.
  • How you work with people outside Finance, including project managers and operational leaders.
  • Examples of accounting processes, systems, spreadsheets, or workflows you have improved.
  • Where you are in your CPA journey and the experience you want to build next.
  • The additional responsibility you are ready to take on in your next role.

Why Tangent?

Tangent is a growing engineering and technology company where Finance is closely connected to the business. You’ll have the opportunity to understand how projects perform, work directly with people across the organization, and build experience beyond traditional transactional accounting. We also want Tangent to be a place where people can do excellent work and have a life outside of it.

Compensation

The anticipated salary range for this role is $80,000 to $100,000, depending on experience, technical capability, and progression toward the CPA designation.

Benefits

Our benefits program includes:

  • Health and dental coverage.
  • A flexible spending account that can be used toward health, wellness, or RRSP savings.
  • A strong paid time off program with flexibility in how employees use their time away from work.

We trust people to manage their responsibilities and their time appropriately. We know that vacation, family commitments, appointments, and life outside of work all matter.

Culture

Tangent has a strong, connected culture, and spending time together is part of that. We organize social events, celebrations, and team activities throughout the year. We also try to be thoughtful and inclusive in how we plan them, recognizing that people have different interests, responsibilities, and commitments outside of work.

Growth

For someone working toward their CPA designation, this role offers exposure to:

  • Financial reporting and month-end close
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Project accounting and job costing
  • Project profitability and financial analysis
  • Business operations
  • Process improvement
  • Cross-functional work with project managers and leaders

As your capability grows, so will the level of ownership you can take on. If you are looking for a Senior Accountant opportunity in Calgary where you can continue progressing toward your CPA designation, gain meaningful project accounting experience, and work closely with the business, we’d like to hear from you.
