We are in an exciting period of growth and transformation. We have new leadership, a revitalized brand, and an elevated commitment to operational excellence and the Durwest Building Experience.

We are actively seeking professionals who take ownership, embrace growth, and build lasting relationships; individuals ready to help us shape the next chapter of Durwest.

Position Overview

The Site Safety Coordinator plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and compliant work environment on all Durwest construction sites. This position requires strong knowledge of construction safety regulations, a proactive approach to identifying hazards, and effective communication across teams.

This role also requires regular physical labour in addition to safety responsibilities, and the successful candidate will be comfortable and physically capable of performing hands-on tasks to support daily site operations.

As the vital link between employees, supervisors, management, and contractors, the Site Safety Coordinator ensures that safety information, training, and initiatives flow seamlessly between the field and management. Reporting directly to the Superintendent, the Coordinator leads the implementation of Durwest’s Health and Safety Program and takes immediate action to correct unsafe conditions while fostering a culture of safety excellence.

Key Focus Areas

Health + Safety Program Execution

  • Lead the implementation of the DCM Health and Safety Program to ensure safe working conditions for all workers, sub-trades, and visitors.
  • Ensure compliance with provincial and federal safety and communicable disease requirements.
  • Conduct two formal daily site inspections to identify hazards, unsafe practices, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure all hazard assessments are completed and filed on the company’s safety management platform.
  • Review and monitor fall protection plans for any work at heights exceeding 25 feet.
  • Supervise the on-site implementation of WHMIS and confirm all workers are adequately trained.
  • Represent DCM during WorkSafeBC and other regulatory inspections.

Orientation, Training + Safety Oversight

  • Deliver safety orientations for new workers and sub-contractors, emphasizing protocols, hazard identification, and site-specific practices.
  • Collect and maintain proof of safety certifications (e.g., fall protection, machine operation, first aid).
  • Assist the Health and Safety Manager with safety compliance, audits, and documentation.
  • Lead and participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and training sessions to promote ongoing awareness.
  • Collaborate in accident and incident investigations, documenting findings and ensuring follow-up corrective actions.
  • Continuously review the performance of the safety program, recommending improvements where needed.

Safety Meetings + Documentation

  • Conduct weekly toolbox talks for Durwest staff to address safety concerns and provide ongoing education.
  • Coordinate and collect daily hazard assessments and weekly toolbox meeting minutes from trade partners.
  • Chair and document monthly site Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, ensuring transparency of outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, including inspections, reports, incident logs, and WorkSafeBC documentation.
  • Track and verify the completion of corrective actions from inspections, investigations, and committee recommendations.

Compliance + Disciplinary Procedures

  • Monitor site-wide adherence to DCM safety policies, regulations, and WorkSafeBC standards.
  • Enforce compliance through disciplinary procedures when necessary, in coordination with the Superintendent.
  • Serve as a positive safety role model, leading by example and promoting a culture of accountability.

Safety Office Maintenance + Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and accessible First Aid and Safety Office and associated storage areas.
  • Post and maintain all Safety Bulletins, inspection reports, and rules in designated on-site areas.
  • Participate in the development and continuous improvement of company safety policies and procedures.
  • Stay up to date with safety regulations, literature, and best practices to enhance on-site programs.
  • Review accident and incident reports to ensure corrective actions are implemented effectively.

Additional Duties

  • Actively support site operations through regular hands-on labour, including material handling, site clean-up, and general labour tasks as directed by the Superintendent. This role is expected to be physically engaged on site and contribute to day-to-day construction activities in addition to safety responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • 2–3 years of experience in construction safety coordination or a related role.
  • Strong understanding and application of WorkSafeBC regulations and industry safety best practices.
  • Proven ability to document, report, and communicate safety performance effectively.
  • Valid Intermediate or Advanced First Aid certification required.
  • Physically capable of performing regular, hands-on labour tasks, including lifting, material handling, and general site support.

Not required, but considered an asset:

  • Post-secondary education or certification in Occupational Health and Safety.

Skills + Abilities

  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to Durwest’s health and safety expectations.
  • Leads by example, promoting safety awareness and positive culture across all teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, applying sound judgment, discretion, and creative problem-solving.
  • Fosters collaborative relationships and maintains professionalism and composure under pressure.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook, with the ability to learn and adapt to DCM’s safety management platform.
