Job Description

WHAT'S THE ROLE

Great software engineering isn’t just about writing better code. It’s about creating the standards, structure and accountability that allow teams to build better solutions consistently.

Dexterra is a services company, not a software engineering company, and that’s what makes this opportunity different. Technology supports a diverse and evolving business, with development happening across teams, functions and initiatives. As Software Engineering Architect, you’ll bring those efforts together, establish stronger engineering practices and create the structure needed to deliver secure, scalable and maintainable solutions.

Reporting to the Enterprise Architect, you’ll take ownership of how software engineering is practised across Dexterra. Working cross-functionally with dispersed development teams, technology partners and business stakeholders, you’ll strengthen delivery, modernize enterprise platforms and help advance our internal software engineering and AI capabilities.

This is an opportunity for someone who sees what can be better and takes ownership of making it happen.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Own and evolve our software engineering practice, establishing clear standards, processes and expectations that improve consistency, quality and accountability.
  • Connect development efforts across the organization, working cross-functionally with dispersed teams, technology partners and business stakeholders to create alignment around how software is designed, developed and delivered.
  • Bring structure without unnecessary bureaucracy, introducing practical engineering disciplines that improve security, scalability, maintainability and delivery.
  • Lead engineering activities supporting the modernization of enterprise platforms, including PVC Connect, with a focus on microservices, API-first development, integrations and scalable architecture.
  • Establish and continuously improve engineering practices for CI/CD, code quality, observability, release management and secure software development.
  • Strengthen delivery through effective technical and code reviews, proof-of-concept initiatives, quality controls and release-readiness practices.
  • Partner with cybersecurity, architecture and cross-functional technology teams to embed security, compliance and enterprise standards into the development lifecycle.
  • Help advance internal AI and software engineering capabilities, including AI-powered solutions, copilots, automation and productivity tools.
  • Translate business requirements into clear technical scope, architecture decisions and achievable delivery plans.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, tools and ways of working, then turn those opportunities into practical change.
  • Mentor engineers, share knowledge and help build a culture grounded in quality, accountability, curiosity and continuous learning.
  • Provide clear visibility into technical decisions, dependencies, risks and progress for technology and business stakeholders.

Qualifications

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

You’re an experienced software engineering leader who combines technical depth with an ownership mindset. You know how to bring structure to complex development environments, align dispersed teams around better practices and influence change across an organization.

Just as importantly, you’re curious about how things can work better. You’re comfortable challenging existing approaches, solving problems and turning ideas into practical improvements.

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years in team or technical leadership.
  • A degree or diploma in computer science, engineering, information systems or a related field.
  • Experience modernizing legacy applications using microservices and API-first architectures.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud engineering, CI/CD, DevOps, cybersecurity and secure software development.
  • Experience with enterprise integrations and AI/ML or LLM-based solutions.
  • The ability to coordinate dispersed teams, influence technical direction and translate business needs into practical solutions.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ownership and Accountability: You take responsibility for outcomes, create clarity and follow through.
  • Process Improvement: You challenge inefficient or inconsistent ways of working and turn opportunities into practical change.
  • Curiosity and Continuous Learning: You ask thoughtful questions, stay current and apply what you learn to make engineering practices better.
