Rooted in community, respect, and Indigenous values, our work helps build a strong, thriving Indigenous community.

The Opportunity

In partnership with the University College of the North, NETES offers the Kenanow Bachelor of Education Program. Kenanow is a traditional learning model that has served Indigenous people for generations. It is rooted in identity, belonging, community history, roles and responsibilities, and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next.

Reporting to the Director of Education and Training, the Bachelor of Education Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall coordination, management and successful delivery of an Indigenous community-based Bachelor of Education program.

The program is intended to provide Indigenous adult learners with an accessible pathway to earning a Bachelor of Education degree while remaining connected to their families, communities and cultural supports. The Program Coordinator will work closely with the partnering university, school divisions, instructors, program staff and community partners to ensure the program meets academic requirements while providing students with a welcoming, supportive and culturally respectful learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure program delivery meets the requirements of NETES and the partnering university.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with the university, school divisions, schools, instructors, supervising teachers and other program partners.
  • Coordinate instructors, classroom space, student activities, cultural programming, practicum placements and other program requirements.
  • Monitor student enrolment, attendance, academic progress, retention and completion.
  • Provide academic advising and help students understand program expectations, policies, practicum requirements and graduation requirements.
  • Identify barriers to student success and coordinate appropriate academic, personal, cultural, financial and community supports.
  • Advocate for students and assist in resolving academic, practicum and program-related concerns.
  • Support the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives, cultural knowledge, community involvement and land-based or cultural learning opportunities, including Elders, Knowledge Keepers and guest speakers.
  • Provide leadership and supervision to program staff, including work assignments, scheduling, orientation, performance management and professional development.
  • Manage program activities and resources within the approved budget, including instructional materials, technology and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student and program records and complete required academic, financial, statistical, practicum and partnership reports.
  • Coordinate student orientations, information sessions, celebrations and graduation activities.
  • Promote the program, support student recruitment and selection, and work collaboratively with other NETES programs and community organizations.
  • Follow all NETES policies and procedures and perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Education or a related field preferred.
  • A Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education or Bachelor of Education degree with relevant experience will be considered.
  • Experience coordinating education, post-secondary, teacher education or community-based programs.
  • Experience working with Indigenous students, communities, organizations, Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Experience developing, supporting or delivering curriculum that reflects Indigenous histories, cultures, languages, perspectives and community knowledge.
  • Experience supporting Indigenous adult learners and responding to educational, academic and personal barriers.
  • Experience working collaboratively with universities, school divisions, schools and community partners.
  • Experience with academic programming, student supports and practicum coordination is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an educational or community-based setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of culturally responsive teaching practices and the barriers Indigenous learners may experience within education systems.
  • Knowledge of Bachelor of Education programming, academic requirements, student supports and practicum placements.
  • Strong program planning, coordination and organizational skills.
  • Ability to create a respectful, supportive and student-centred learning environment.
