Location: Ideally in the Calgary area; can be remote/hybrid

About the Job:

We're hiring an Intermediate Rails Software Developer to build and maintain the backend services behind atVenu's platform. The successful candidate will be an adept Rails/React developer who enjoys looking backwards, refactoring legacy code to fix vulnerabilities, while keeping an eye towards the future developing new infrastructure features. Experience leveraging AI tools in software engineering and security would be nice to have.

atVenu is the leading live event commerce platform for merchandise, food and beverage sales at concerts, festivals, stadiums and venues. Our software powers offline-capable point of sale, real-time dashboards and mobile ordering, on both custom and commodity hardware.

Our Tech Stack:
  • Backend: Ruby, Rails, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, CouchDb
  • Frontend: React Native, React, JavaScript
  • Cloud Platform: AWS
  • Tools: GitHub, Sidekiq

What you'll do

  • Complete development tasks as assigned and/or review and select stories you can execute, with the support of your leader or an assigned partner or mentor.
  • Consistently write functions that are easily testable and understood by other developers considering edge cases and errors with appropriate documentation and test procedures (not just lines of code).
  • Identify areas where security implications may exist.
  • Write automated tests and take part in code review.
  • Architect scalable, reliable services using established design patterns and best practices.
  • Help work on reducing technical debt and refactoring legacy code into modern, maintainable standards.
  • Anticipate future use cases and make design decisions that minimize the cost of change.
  • Integrate with POS devices, mobile apps and third-party payment and reporting services
  • Help keep production stable: monitor, troubleshoot and fix issues, including during high-traffic event windows
  • Improve performance, reliability and code quality across existing services
  • Work with product managers and designers to turn requirements into shippable work

What you bring

  • 5+ years of professional software development, with at least 3 years in Ruby on Rails
  • Solid grasp of API and SQL (PostgreSQL or MySQL)
  • Comfort with GitHub and AWS
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript for the occasional front-end change
  • Practical knowledge of AI development, including:
    • Rapid evaluation and adoption of emerging AI technologies
    • Techniques for agent configuration to help ensure reliable outcomes
    • Integrating AI into the software development lifecycle responsibly and effectively
  • Clear written communication and the habits to work well on a distributed team

Nice to have

  • React or React Native experience
  • Docker and a major cloud provider (AWS or GCP)
  • Payments, POS, e-commerce or ticketing experience
  • Familiarity with PCI or SOC 2 practices
