Job description

Safety Advisor (Transportation Field Safety)

Westcan Bulk Transport

Location: Edmonton Terminal

The Kenan Advantage Group Inc., (KAG), is North America’s largest tank truck transporter and logistics provider, delivering energy commodities, specialty products, merchant gases, and food products across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Our Canadian Operating companies are Westcan Bulk Transport, RTL Construction, Les Distributions Carl Beaulac, and Fisher Transport – KAG Canada!

We have two openings on our Safety Team at our Edmonton, Alberta, terminal. We are looking for hands-on, people-focused Transportation Field Safety Advisors to support our team in Edmonton and the surrounding area.

At its heart, this role is about people. Rather than writing or developing safety programs, you’ll be out in the field alongside our teams, building relationships, sharing safety messages, and providing practical support to help everyone work safely each day.

Up to 85% of your week will be spent in the field in all weather conditions, with your coveralls and PPE on, working alongside our professional truck drivers and customers, and the remaining 15% in the office. Key areas of focus include monitoring driver training and evaluations, support for the performance management program, regular customer site inspections, incident prevention and hazard identification, emergency response, and incident and accident investigation and reporting.

The successful candidates must be willing to work a shift schedule that includes evenings and weekends and be available to be on call during their shifts.

Responsibilities:

Hazard Prevention & Site Safety

  • Participate in Job Hazard Assessments and implement corrective actions where required.
  • Conduct regular customer site inspections to identify and address potential hazards.
  • Visit new customer sites and assist in the mapping process for delivery locations.
  • Participate in terminal audits and support continuous improvement of safety programs.
  • Support emergency response planning and readiness.
  • Perform other duties as required in support of the HSE team.

Incident Response & Investigation

  • Respond to and investigate all incidents, including injuries, motor vehicle collisions, spills, and product mixes, identifying root causes and contributing factors.
  • Prepare thorough, accurate investigation documents for government agencies, insurance adjusters, internal files, and customer documentation requirements.
  • Lead accident scene mitigation, including remediation coordination and addressing environmental concerns.
  • Recommend appropriate corrective actions for employees where required.

Driver Training & Evaluation

  • Evaluate and document driver road tests, identifying and following up on areas of concern.
  • Complete job observations as assigned and provide constructive, real-time coaching to drivers.
  • Facilitate in-cab, classroom, and field training to build driver skills and safety awareness.
  • Support the performance management program through consistent evaluation and documentation.
  • Conduct engaging toolbox meetings that reinforce safe work practices.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in a field safety role within the trucking sector is required, along with working knowledge of the dangerous goods and other bulk products we haul.
  • Post-secondary education or certification in Occupational Health and Safety, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations, and National Safety Code requirements.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • A valid Class 1 driver's license with a clean driver's abstract is required.
  • Strong training, coaching, and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility with drivers, customers, and leadership.
  • Excellent organizational and report-writing skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and respond to after-hours incidents as required.

Total Compensation:

  • Competitive wages, a company-matched RRSP/DPSP savings program, a bonus opportunity, and a scholarship program for employees’ children.

We have a strong culture of teamwork, with a balance of seriousness and fun. If you want to contribute to KAG's excellent tradition of innovation and leadership in the logistics and transportation industry, we invite you to apply!

External applicants under consideration will be required to complete a company-paid criminal record check.

We are committed to building and supporting a diverse and inclusive culture where ALL employees and partners feel valued and appreciated for their uniqueness and contributions. We welcome applications from all interested individuals; however, only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
